Track & Field Qualifies 44 to NCAA Prelims

The UTEP track and field team will be sending 16 student-athletes to compete in the NCAA West Preliminaries next weekend (May 25-27) in Austin, Texas.

After preliminaries, the championships will take place in Eugene, Oregon, beginning on June 7.

BU has four athletes competing in two individual events: Taylor Bennett (100, 200 meters), Cion Hicks (discus, shot put), Kiana Horton (100, 200 meters), Juanita Mainoo (100 meters, 200 meters), and Maxwell Willis (100 meters, 200 meters). Cleirigh Buttner has run the 800 meters at the NCAA East Preliminary in each of the last two seasons and qualified for the NCAA Championships last season. Should both equal their top marks set this season in the high jump and javelin, respectively, they would be in prime position to finish in the top-12 and advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time.

The Falcons will be represented in both the men's and women's high jump (junior John Reynolds, junior Shelley Spires), pole vault (senior Kyle Pater, sophomore Kathryn Tomczak), 5000-meter run (sophomore Jacob Bilvado, Long), 1500-meter run (senior Matt Dorsey, Gillespie, Vessa) and 400-meter dash (Koss, Walden, freshman Megan Irvine). At the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, competitors in individual events will be pared from 48 to 24 in the first round and then down to 12 in the second round.

Five out of the seven athletes competed at the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships back in early March. She now holds the school record in the 100m hurdles on a quick time of 13.37 and broke a conference meet record last weekend in the 400m hurdles, finishing in just 57.82. First round - Friday, May 26, at 4:30 p.m. Hall claimed gold in this event at the conference meet last week. Her best high jump mark of the year is also the best of her career, clearing 6 feet and 0.5 inches (1.84m) en route to a bronze medal at the Mountain West Championships.
