Turkish Security Assaults Protestors In Washington DC

Tuesday's fight outside the embassy injured 11 people, at least one critically. Video shows Erdogan supporters and bodyguards flooding through the police line and beating protesters on American soil.

The Turkish Embassy maintains the bodyguards were acting in self defense and that the protesters were "aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the president".

Yesterday, the US State Department said "violence is never an appropriate response to free speech".

In a statement Wednesday, Washington police said the incident outside the Turkish embassy stood "in contrast to the First Amendment rights and principles we work tirelessly to protect each and every day".

However, the two security detail members that were held after the brawl were released and are already back in Turkey.

"We weren't doing anything wrong", said pro-Erdogan demonstrator Mustafa Dikilitas.

Trump's approval, before the visit, of plans to arm the YPG as it advances towards Islamic State's Raqqa stronghold had overshadowed talks between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, but Erdogan did not directly criticize the plan at the White House.

Two men were also arrested by D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department on the scene - Jalal Kheirabaoi of Fairfax, VA, and Ayten Necmi of Woodside, NY, according to police reports.

"You can not have that happen in the United States of America".

"This is the United States of America", McCain told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. This isn't Turkey. This isn't a Third World country.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on May 18 that Brett McGurk, the USA special envoy to the coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), should be removed from his post as he "supports terrorist groups".

Republican senators Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Marco Rubio issued a statement denouncing the violence and demanding an immediate apology from the Turkish government.

Police Chief Peter Newsham said on Wednesday the violence was "not something we tolerate in our city".

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had reiterated his pledge to destroy the US-backed YPG militia fighting Isis at their White House meeting on Tuesday.

Turkey considers the People's Protection Units or YPG in Syria a terror organization an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has waged a three-decade long insurgency against the Turkish state, seeking their own nation.
