We'll need another strong performance at Stoke - Wenger

Alexis Sanchez's superb solo strike was typical of the Arsenal star, Arsene Wenger beamed, after the Gunners won 2-0 at Southampton on Wednesday.

Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud struck in the second half of a largely forgettable contest on the south coast as Arsenal recorded their first win at St Mary's since 2003. Third-place Liverpool, with 70 points, have just two games left.

"Overall it was a very convincing win", he told Sky Sports.

Arsene Wenger on Alexis Sanchez and his cool finish: "The goal he scored tonight shows what he's about: very good technique in a short space".

"We had to (dig deep) because Southampton started at a strong pace".

With just seven goals to their name in that run themselves, it appears that an unusually pragmatic Arsenal are therefore looking to merely grind out the results they need in order to squeeze back into the top four.

The only negative for Arsenal about the evening was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming off with a hamstring injury in the first half; Wenger said the midfielder-turned-wing-back will be assessed in the coming days but wouldn't give an estimate for his return.

Asked about Wenger's side finding their form at the right time, Mustafi replied: "Well I wish we found that before".

Can our side push on and put the pressure on our rivals?

It was Sanchez who opened the scoring on the hour mark, twisting and turning through the Southampton defence before slotting past Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster - his 20th league strike of the season.

"It was a very even game in the first half but in the second half I felt we took over and created many opportunities to score". "You can see that the team is together, fights and is ready for it and we have to recover now physically and see how everybody is for Saturday and see do I need to make some changes".

With six minutes left, Arsenal made sure of the points when Sanchez and Ramsey combined to set up Giroud, who had the relatively simple task of heading home from close range.

Every game we try to give ourselves a chance.

"It was interesting to play at this level against a good team", said Puel.

"We had a few opportunities and luckily we scored two".
