Comey Likely to Testify Trump Tried to Influence Him on Russia Probe

James Comey, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief whose firing by US President Donald Trump has triggered uproar, has agreed to testify publicly about Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

The announcement that Mr Comey would testify followed disclosure by the Justice Department that Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein had talked with Attorney-General Jeff Sessions about replacing Mr Comey last winter, before either man had been confirmed for his post in the Trump administration. That flies in the face of the White House's public insistence that Comey's dismissal was not linked to his ongoing investigation.

Earlier this week, investors dumped stocks in response to reports that Trump in February had asked Comey to stop investigating his former national security adviser, prompting accusations the president may have tried to hamper the probe.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was sacked by President Donald Trump amid an agency probe into alleged Russian meddling in the United States election.

Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee said in a statement that he's optimistic Comey's testimony, "will help answer some of the questions that have arisen since Director Comey was so suddenly dismissed by the President", and that it will, "shed light on issues critical to this Committee's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election".

"The committee looks forward to receiving testimony from the former director on his role in the development of the intelligence community assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections, and I am hopeful that he will clarify for the American people recent events that have been broadly reported in the media", Burr said in the statement.

Intercepted Russian communications suggest that Russian officials felt that they had built up such a strong relationship with Flynn that they could use him to influence Trump and his inner circle, CNN reported.

Among Trump's senior White House advisers are several former campaign officials, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller and Kellyanne Conway.

The White House did not comment on the authenticity of Trump's conversation with the Russian officials in the Oval Office on 9 May.

"By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia's actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russian Federation", he said. "I have full confidence he will conduct an independent, thorough and fair investigation".

"Director Comey served his country with honor for many years, and he deserves an opportunity to tell his story".

The revelation undercuts President Donald Trump's insistence that his campaign had nothing to do with the Kremlin.

Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California speaks during an interview with The Associated Press in her office on Capitol Hill in Washington, Friday, May 19, 2017.

Former FBI Director James Comey will be testifying publicly in Congress in what has become a highly anticipated appearance that could answer lots of questions about how much President Trump tried to interfere in the investigation into his campaign's connections to Russian Federation. He said "No. question".
