Person Killed, 22 Injured After Car Plows Into Crowd In Times Square

NY police identified the driver as 26-year-old Richard Rojas from the Bronx.

Richard Rojas, 26, appeared subdued during a brief court appearance where prosecutors detailed a felony murder charge. Harrison Ramos, a close friend, said Rojas had been going through a rough time ever since he returned home from serving in the Navy.

He exhibited similar paranoid symptoms during previous arrests, claiming he was being harassed and followed, according to one law enforcement official.

The New York Police Department has fenced off the sidewalk in the area where the accident took place, and have also installed concrete barriers at each intersection to prevent cars from driving on the sidewalks. City officials quickly characterized the crash as an "isolated incident" with no larger connections to terror.

Richard Rojas, the driver accused of plowing his auto against a crowd in Times Square on Thursday, has been charged this morning with one count of second degree murder, 20 counts of attempted murder and 5 counts of aggravated vehicular homicide. Her 13-year-old sister, Ava, was among the injured, four of whom were in critical condition. "First he punched me a couple of times and then he started kicking me and got on top of me and telling me that he would kill me".

Rojas enlisted in the Navy in 2011 and spent two months in a naval prison two years later, though it is not known why. In 2012, he served aboard the USS Carney, a destroyer. Sources told ABC News they also found indications he was interested in Scientology.

Grief counselors are at Alyssa Elsman's MI high school Friday, offering support to students and staff. Do you think they need to tone it down?

Rojas, said to have been discharged from the US Navy following disciplinary problems, appeared in court on Friday. "But if you could talk to her for a minute, you'd realize she was engaging. The more you got to know her, the more you would realize she was amusing, and thoughtful, and compassionate to other people".

Police executed a search warrant on Thursday at the Bronx apartment Rojas shared with his mother.

"Of the 19 that were treated at local hospitals, seven were admitted, there are still three that are in critical condition and there's still one that's very critical and she is a 38-year-old woman from Canada".
