Robert Mueller has credibility needed to complete Russian Federation investigation

President Donald Trump on Thursday categorically denied pressuring former FBI director James Comey to end the FBI's investigation into ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Trump wrote, his anger boiling over.

Until Wednesday, Rosenstein was the most senior Department of Justice official overseeing the investigation, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions, an active Trump supporter during the 2016 election, recused himself on all matters relating to Russian Federation and the campaign.

Trump wrote on his twitter account: "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

"It shows we're a divided, mixed-up, not-unified country", Trump told the group. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the first to speak to reporters staked outside the briefing room.

The decision by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein takes some of the pressure off the Trump team in the wake of the firing of Jim Comey.

"I now have significantly greater confidence that the investigation will follow the facts wherever they lead", said Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

But said he respects the decision Wednesday (May 17) by his Justice Department to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel for a probe that has enveloped the White House in a political storm. The FBI's counterterror mission was elevated in those years, as the US intelligence agencies adjusted to better position America to prevent another attack of such magnitude. Trump aides said he never tried to squelch the Flynn investigation nor made inappropriate disclosures to the Russians.

Durbin said that Rosenstein said that Mueller would draw the scope of the investigation, have sufficient resources and won't be interfered with by the administration.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio also spoke to the press following Rosenstein's testimony but did not say much on Rosenstein's testimony.

The media conference was the first time the President had faced questions since the Justice Department named a special counsel to probe Russia's involvement in the 2016 election.

Rosenstein's decision to name a special counsel seems to have helped redeem his reputation as a nonpartisan operative. "The important ongoing bipartisan investigation in the House will also continue".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said: "Bob was a fine USA attorney, a great Federal Bureau of Investigation director and there's no better person who could be asked to perform this function". Mark Warner (D-VA).

Initial statements from the White House said Mr Trump had fired Mr Comey on the recommendation of the Justice Department, due to his handling of the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

On Capitol Hill, meanwhile, three congressional committees, all led by Republicans, confirmed they wanted to hear from Comey.

Reports have since emerged that in February, Trump had asked Comey to drop the investigation into his former national security advisor Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation.

Rosenstein was at the Capitol on Thursday afternoon to brief the entire Senate in a closed session about the status of the Russian Federation investigation and about his role in the president's abrupt dismissal of Comey as FBI chief last week.
