Trump has leadership and perseverance: Pence

Vice President Mike Pence told graduates at Grove City College that leadership brings both honor and opposition, so they should expect opposition and persevere.

Students plan to stand up when Pence begins speaking and quietly leave the ceremony.

In his remarks at the IN university, the vice president criticized what he called campus "safe spaces" and urged students not to suppress free speech. "I will never forget my commencement ceremony".

The Vice President, who served as governor of IN for four years, will receive an honorary degree at the ceremony on Sunday.

"We're not concerned", Browne said.

The reaction to Pence's selection has not been universally positive among members of the class of 2017, however.

In a speech lasting roughly 10-minutes, Pence thanked our local heroes on this Armed Services Day.

'The participation and degree-conferring of VP Pence stand as an endorsement of policies and actions which directly contradict Catholic social teachings and values and target vulnerable members of the University's community, ' Notre Dame student Xitlaly Estrada said in a press release shared on Twitter.

Mills Langehans who was in the audience and traveled 13 hours from SC with her family to see her sister graduate tells 21 News it was once in a lifetime experience to hear Vice-President Pence speak.

"Never let it go", said Pence.

"I'm thrilled it's very exhilarating especially since I'm from a small town where nothing really happens", Langehans said.

40,000 people are expected to be at this year's Notre Dame Commencement.

US Vice President Mike Pence has marked Armed Forces Day by boasting that the Trump administration is committed to rebuilding the country's military. "He has advocated and voted repeatedly to restrict and/or to remove rights of LGBT individuals". "He's being put out to express things for the president that perhaps are not totally the truth".

"Vice President Pence has a right to speak anywhere he's invited, it's not a question of any of that", said Hegedus.

Nick Ayers and Marty Obst, two of Pence's top aides will head the new organization.

And the gathering, which also included a counterprotest in support of Pence's visit to Grove City College, remained peaceful, those in attendance said. "His theocratic doctrine and myopic view of what is essential for the good of his state led to disastrous legislation that continues to reverberate throughout Indiana".

There are a number of other protests of Pence being organized for Sunday.

They are targeting the former IN governor's views on abortion, gay rights, gun control and immigration.

That same year, Pence ordered state agencies to halt resettlement for Syrian refugees after terrorist attacks in Europe.

While there have been many protests lined up, Jaskowski said he felt it was an incorrect assumption to believe the University community was completely against the decision to select Pence as the Commencement speaker.

Founded in 1876, Grove City College had to take its fight to refuse all federal funding to the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1980s.

The school's "close-knit group", including the Pences, supported the McNultys when their son, Joseph, passed away in 2012, the president said.
