United Nations welcomes Chibok girls' release, urges all be freed

The release of the 82 girls may give a boost to the former military ruler who made crushing the Islamist militant Boko Haram insurgency a key pillar of his election campaign in 2015.

"I think this (Buhari) administration is doing well on the issue of the Chibok girls".

New revelation has emerged about the fate of some of the Chibok girls who were rescued from the grip of the deadly Boko Haram sect.

Finally, some more of the Chibok schoolgirls are coming home.

Nigeria's first lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has encouraged the 82 Chibok schoolgirls released to put their ordeal in the hands of boko haram terrorists behind them and refocus on a brighter future ahead of them.

A new video published by worldwide media outfit CNN on Thursday shows some of the Chibok girls released by the terrorist group Boko Haram in 2016 in a government facility.

Alhassan said the students' parents will meet their daughters at the presidential villa in Abuja. Some of relatives didn't live long enough to see their daughters return home.

Numerous students from the group of girls who escaped have been given an education by the New Foundation School, a program of the American University of Nigeria created especially for them - and the girls who were released in October are expected to join them. "My baby will be back soon, if she is among them or if she isn't", she said. "I really want to see my daughter, but I can't come unless with government invitation".

Following the release of over 80 missing schoolgirls, human rights groups have expressed concerns about their rights and future.

"Those saying we are not allowing them access are not the direct parents of the girls; we can not bring anybody to see them apart from their biological parents, allowing visitors everyday will not allow them to heal fast", the minister added.

The list was published early today after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari met with the young women before announcing he was leaving for London immediately for medical checkups as fears over his health continue.

Some parents of the kidnapped girls are in the capital, Abuja.

"The parents of the #Chibokgirls are free to visit them at any time".

"The 21 girls initially said they won't like to go back to school in Chibok but after the various rehabilitation and reintegration process they have gone through, they are now set to return to school in September; they are now fit and eager to go back to school".

The released girls were exchanged for five Boko Haram fighters held by authorities, according to one report.

Soon after the initial kidnapping, some of the students escaped, and a year ago, 21 girls were released as part of an International Red Cross operation.
