Donald Trump's airline laptop ban might be expanded to Europe

European security officials told The Daily Beast that the department is preparing to ban in-cabin laptops for all US -bound flights from Europe.

The Daily Beast cited European security officials in its exclusive reporting.

The ban applies to tablets, laptops, e-readers, cameras, and portable DVD players, among other electronics.

"We'll likely expand the restrictions", David Lapan, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, told The New York Times. "DHS continues to evaluate the threat environment and will make changes when necessary to keep air travelers safe".

US officials instituted the current ban in March over fears that terror groups have the ability to convert laptops into bombs that could potentially bring down a passenger airplane. A man suspected of being a suicide bomber was killed in the blast.

For one thing, as the Daily Beast points out, US carrier still don't have a good answer for the fact that the lithium ion batteries in laptops catching fire in the cargo holds of planes probably pose an equal if not greater security threat than terrorist bombs.

The Department of Homeland Security is considering banning laptops in all airplane cabins on flights from Europe to the US.

In March, the U.S. government prohibited passengers from bringing electronics larger than a cell phone in the cabins of nonstop flights to the United States from 10 airports in the Middle East and North Africa, citing concerns that terrorists could use the devices to carry explosives on board.

European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said DHS Secretary John Kelly and "a number" of European ministers were scheduled to hold the talks late Friday.

Government officials have been meeting with United States airlines on a almost weekly basis to discuss how such a ban might be implemented and plan to do so again on Thursday, according to reports.

"We're expecting something to happen, we're just not sure exactly what or when", said a senior executive at a major European airline. Government officials have been meeting with USA airlines on a almost weekly basis and intend to do so again later this week.

A French official with direct knowledge about Friday's meeting said France planned to push back against the measure, saying there was no information to suggest a significant increase in the terror threat.

Terrorists have targeted European airports, with two Islamic State group suicide bombers setting off explosive in the Brussels airport in March 2016.

As the Daily Beast points out, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recorded at least 33 incidents a year ago in which electronic devices caused fire emergencies in the cabin during flights. Laptops are also a danger on flights from Asia and from North, South, and Central America.
