Missing Indian mountaineer dies after climbing Mt Everest

An Indian climber went missing while descending the "death zone" after scaling Mount Everest, officials said on Sunday, following the death of two climbers over the past month.

Four people died on Mount Everest in the past week, bringing the number of climbers killed on the mountain during the current spring climbing season to six.

"We have confirmation of his death but no other details are known".

Last week, Nepali climber Lhakpa Sherpa scaled the peak for the eighth time, breaking her own record for most summits by a woman. He had reached the so-called "death zone" above the 8,000-meter mark, a part of the mountain notorious for its hard terrain and thin air.

American climber Dan Mazur headed the 16 member team whose crew also included 26-year-old Indian climber Ravi Kumarwho has gone missing.

According to the Washington Post, Roland Yearwood was one of three climbers who died.

He died climbing down to the lower camp from the North Col route at around 7500 metres, The Himalayan Times reported.




"Rescuers have recovered his body", Thupden Sherpa of Arun Treks and Expeditions said, adding that the remains had been located 200 meters from one of the ascent paths and that the rescuers were studying The possibility of recovering the remains. According to reports, Kumar lost contact with the balcony area, the last resting spot before climbers ascend t the south summit of the mountain.

Climbers from the United States, Slovakia and Australia also died on the mountain over the weekend.

The 54-year-old from Queensland was reportedly hit by altitude sickness after reaching 7,500m and died as he was trying to descend. Both climbers died on May 21, 2017.

Mr Kumar, 27, fell sick on his way down from the summit on Saturday and did not make it to the nearest camp, though his accompanying Nepalese Sherpa guide did.

This year, The Nepalese Tourism Department has issued a record number of permits for climbing Everest.

Three climbers have died and another has gone missing in separate hiking incidents on Mount Everest. Almost 200 climbers went to Tibet, from where the 8,850 meter (29,035 feet) Everest Summit can also be climbed.

The physician had returned to Everest after surviving an avalanche on the mountain in 2015 during a devastating quake.
