PM Trudeau: Many innocent victims of United Kingdom concert attack 'far too young'

An explosion rocked the Manchester Arena at 22:35 on Monday evening following a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande.

Grande, who had just finished the first of three scheduled United Kingdom performances, tweeted about her devastation several hours later: "broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words".

Sharing a snap of herself with Ariana, Miley Cyrus wrote on Instagram: "Wishing I could give my friend @arianagrande a great big hug right now. love love love you.so sorry you had to be apart of such a tragic event! my most honest condolences to anyone and everyone affected by this horrific attack! all I can do is send as much HOPE & PEACE your way! I don't have words".

The bomb disposal unit was on the scene with ambulances early on Tuesday. But when I think of Manchester, the place that I know, I think of the spirit of the people there and...a more tight-knit people you will be hard pressed to find; strong proud, caring people with community at their core.

Manchester Arena said the explosion happened "outside the venue in a public space".

Taxis and local people offered free rides to those affected. Twitter and Facebook were filled with appeals for the missing.

'This is a fast-moving investigation and we have significant resources deployed to both the investigation and the visible patrols that people will see across Greater Manchester as they wake up to news of the events last night.

"We ran out", Robinson told Reuters.

"Everyone pls share this, my little sister Emma was at the Ari concert tonight in #Manchester and she isn't answering her phone, pls help me", one message said posted alongside a picture of a blonde girl with flowers in her hair. Her mother, Charlotte Campbell, said the 15-year-old attended the concert with her best friend from school.

"Britain is on its second-highest alert level of 'severe", meaning an attack by militants is considered highly likely.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. One wrote: "May they taste what the weak people in Mosul and (Raqqa) experience from their being bombed and burned", according to the USA -based SITE Intelligence Group.

The Manchester incident comes almost two months after an assailant killed five people outside Parliament in London, the first mass-casualty attack since the 2005 London bombings.

Video shown on Sky News showed hundreds of people fleeing from the arena as police and emergency vehicles arrived.

Announcing that the death toll had risen overnight, Greater Manchester Police chief constable Ian Hopkins said: "What I can confirm is that there are children among the deceased".

Speaking outside Downing Street after chairing a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee, Mrs May said the perpetrator had chosen the time and place of his attack deliberately to cause "maximum carnage and to kill and injure indiscriminately". Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, said in a statement that he had spoken to Prime Minister Theresa May and had agreed that all national campaigning for the June 8 election would be suspended.

Service at the Manchester Victoria train station, which is located under the arena, had been canceled, officials said.

It is the largest indoor venue in the city with a concert capacity of around 18,000.

Andy James had taken his nine-year-old brother to what was his first ever pop concert.
