Reformists sweep Tehran election as Rouhani wins Iran vote

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has congratulated Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for securing reelection on Friday (19 May), assuring him that the European Union will continue to work towards full implementation of the landmark nuclear deal. "If the Trump administration is willing to unclench its fist, it can advance USA national interest and security in the Middle East in ways that confrontation and war have proven unable to". Rouhani said that Iranians are "waiting for this government to become stable intellectually" and that "hopefully, things will settle down.so we could pass more accurate judgments".

"The Americans do not know our region, that's what the catch is", he said.

"The people know. that without competition on the basis of quality, not on the basis of political or security power, that our economy can not progress", he said.

The president added that "the issue of terrorism can not be solved through giving money to superpowers".

Saudi Arabia and Iran compete for influence across the Middle East, respectively backing rival political or armed groups in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

Rouhani, 68, faces the same limits on his power to transform Iran that prevented him from delivering social change in his first term, and that thwarted Khatami, who failed to deliver on a reform agenda as president from 1997-2005.

"American officials should know that whenever we need to technically test a missile, we will do so and will not wait for their permission", Rouhani said, repeating Iran's commonly expressed stance on the programme.

Female voters queue at a polling station. The elections remain tightly controlled, however, and many candidates are excluded during a pre-election vetting process. Trump has said the nuclear accord that world powers reached with Iran is one of the worst deals he's seen and is reviewing policy toward the country. "Pak-Iran relations are historic".

Tensions escalated past year.

"They are there to encourage Sunni Saudi Arabia's thirst for war against Shia Iran and its allies".

Rouhani decisively won a presidential election Friday, securing another four-year term. They pointed out that although Trump can renegotiate, all the other negotiating partners will have to give their go signal as the deal is not a bilateral one but a multilateral agreement.

Mr Trump began a trip to Israel on Monday by saying that it shared a "common cause" with its Arab neighbours in "the threat posed by Iran".

"Our nation's message in the election was clear: Iran's nation chose the path of interaction with the world, away from violence and extremism", Rouhani said.

He deplored Americans have always made mistakes with regard to our region; "when they attached Afghanistan and Iraq, when they imposed sanctions on Iran, when they raided Syria and Yemen, Americans do not know our region and the problem is that those who are advising the Americans are unfortunately either rulers who are misguiding the U.S., or buying people in the US. We hope Europe does not fall into the trap of countries that encourage their wrong interpretations of the region", Rouhani added.

"Yesterday, you said "No" to those who wanted us to return to the past", Rouhani told Iranians in a televised victory speech. "When they imposed sanctions on us, they made a mistake", he said.
