FBI declines to provide Comey memos to Congress

The statement from attorney Jamie Gorelick was issued amid reports that the FBI was investigating meetings Kushner had in December with Russian officials.

Kushner, a key White House adviser, had meetings late a year ago with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, and Russian banker Sergey Gorkov.

While Mr. Flynn and the former Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort, are persons of interest in the FBI investigation, Mr. Kushner is not a target, but a subject of investigation, according to reports based on conversations with officials.

Kushner attorney Jamie Gorelick says Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about the meetings. The Washington Post reported this week that the president had also asked two of the top US intelligence officials to publicly deny evidence existed to link his campaign to Russian interference in the presidential election.

Trump did so after top FBI officials, including now-fired Director James Comey, reportedly refused a White House request to knock down news stories on possible Trump campaign-Russia links, and after Comey reportedly declined Trump's entreaty to end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The FBI responded to Chaffetz in a letter Thursday citing Robert Mueller's appointment as special counsel in the bureau's investigation of Russian Federation as justification to delay fulfilling the committee's request.

Chaffetz's panel is one of several in Congress investigating alleged efforts by Russian Federation to tip the election to Trump, and the possibility that Trump associates had coordinated with Moscow.

Chaffetz is seeking Federal Bureau of Investigation documents and recordings detailing communications between Trump and Comey.

NBC News and The Washington Post first reported that the FBI's ongoing investigation includes a look at Kushner, which would place the probe inside the White House.

"We are still awaiting official responses from both the Justice Department and White House, " the Senate Judiciary Committee said in a statement late Wednesday.

"The focus of the Committee's investigation is the independence of the FBI", Chaffetz wrote Thursday in a letter to acting FBI Director Andrew G. McCabe. "I trust and hope you understand this and make the right decision - to produce these documents to the committee immediately and on a voluntary basis".

But Chaffetz, who intends to resign from his seat in the House of Representatives on June 30, is not taking no for an answer. In fact, the Committee's investigation will complement the work of the Special Counsel.
