As US Retreats, European Union And China Seek Leadership At Climate Summit

The reports that the US will pull out has reportedly united powers like the European Union and China in an unusual alliance meant to uphold the agreement.

"The EU and China are joining forces to forge ahead on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and accelerate the global transition to clean energy", EU climate commissioner Miguel Arias Canete said about the upcoming EU-China summit, stressing they remain committed to Paris.

Trump, however, said that he would officially announce his decision on Thursday.

If President Trump withdraws from the accord, United States carbon will continue to drop - The projections are that they will fall about half as much as had been planned by President Obama.

Abandoning the pact would isolate the US from a raft of worldwide allies who spent years negotiating the 2015 agreement to fight global warming and pollution by reducing carbon emissions.

Canada, the European Union, and China have said they will honour their commitments to the pact even if the U.S. withdraws.

What would a U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement mean for the rest of the world?

A withdrawal by the United States from the Paris climate deal would be disappointing but the European Union stood ready to take global leadership on this issue, the European Commission said on Wednesday. These include carbon dioxide generated from burning of fossil fuels that scientists blame for a warming planet, sea level rise, droughts and more frequent violent storms.

Musk said: "I've done all I can to advise directly" to Trump and through others in the White House. Several big coal companies, including Cloud Peak Energy, had publicly urged Trump to stay in the deal as a way to help protect the industry's mining interests overseas, though others asked Trump to exit the accord to help ease regulatory pressures on domestic miners.

Of the $3 billion promised, the USA, which is the second biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, is still to pay $2 billion. They said withdrawal would undermine U.S. credibility and its position as a global leader, empowering nations like China to drive the climate agenda and set worldwide standards while also reaping economic benefits from a growing clean energy sector.

India is feeling the effects of climate change with rising temperature, water shortage and agricultural stress, Arunabha Ghosh, founder-CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, an NGO, said. "Mr. Trump believes that because he doesn't know the details".

The Natural Resources Defense Council estimated that climate change, if unaddressed, could cost the USA economy almost $2 trillion a year in current dollars by the year 2100 in four particularly impactful areas: hurricane damages, real estate losses, energy costs and water costs. For him, a withdrawal might be a way of making good on his pledge to put "America First", ahead of worldwide obligations negotiated by his predecessors.

Trump, who has previously called global warming a hoax, did not confirm the decision in a post on Twitter, saying only, "I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days".
