Associate says fired FBI head OK'd to testify

Former FBI Director James Comey will testify before the U.S. Senate regarding the allegations that he was sacked by President Donald Trump after the president pressured Comey to shut down the investigation of fired National Security Director Michael Flynn, CNN reports.

Comey has spoken privately with Special Counsel Robert Mueller III to work out the parameters for his testimony to ensure there are no legal entanglements as a result of his public account, a source said.

Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation, however, entered the spotlight again last week after a report that a possibly fake Russian intelligence document, obtained by the FBI during the election, influenced Comey's decision to announce the end of the investigation. According to Lichtblau, Comey and Bob Mueller have been discussing the parameters that would govern what he can and cannot say during his testimony, in order to not interfere with any ongoing criminal investigations with the public testimony.

The Comey testimony could definitely change the way that both Republicans and Democrats think about Trump's conduct with Russian Federation prior to the election and after. "The Committee welcomes the testimony of former Director Comey, but does not have an announcement to make at this time", Rebecca Glover, Burr's spokesperson, told CBS News.

Congress is now out of session.

The Associated Press reported earlier this month that Comey planned to testify before the Senate committee after Memorial Day, but the approval from Mueller to do so could indicate that date is fast approaching.

A spokeswoman for the committee's chairman, Sen. The president's son-in-law and future staffer reportedly suggested to Russia's ambassador, shortly after the election, that they establish a secure channel to communicate off of U.S. radar."If you're going to create a back channel that relies exclusively on the Russian communications and apparatus, that's a really serious issue", said Mark Lowenthal, a former assistant director at the Central Intelligence Agency.Other major issues await Trump at home.

As of Wednesday morning, Comey's testimony in front of the committee had not yet been scheduled, though there are talks that the appearance could happen next week, according to a second source familiar with the matter.

Controversy surrounding Comey's firing continues to dog the White House.
