China activist probing firm linked to Ivanka held

China activist probing firm linked to Ivanka held

Two Chinese labor activists were reported missing, with a third detained by police, while they were investigating violations at a factory that manufactured Ivanka Trump shoes, Bloomberg reports, citing a worker advocacy group.

The detained activist's wife said that she had lost contact with her husband on May 28, 2017, however the police contacted her on Tuesday to inform her that Hua had been detained by the authorities.

Hua Haifeng, who was working undercover with the two other men in Jiangxi province, has been held by police and accused of illegally using a wiretapping device, China Labor Watch director Li Qiang told AFP.

China Labour Watch is one of the highest profile rights groups working in China, examining working conditions in factories that were the backbone of China's massive economic expansion, supplying some of the world's top companies. But Li said his work has never attracted such scrutiny from China's state security apparatus.

As if political news couldn't get any more shocking, Ivanka Trump now finds herself in the middle of a potential scandal in China.

"There's never been any problems before", Hua's wife, Deng Guimian, who relies exclusively on her husband's income to support their two young children and three elderly relatives, told Bloomberg by phone Wednesday.

White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks referred questions to Ivanka Trump's brand. The family of Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump's husband, is attempting to raise money from Chinese investors for a real estate venture.

Ms Trump is US President Donald Trump's daughter and a White House adviser, whose fashion brand sells clothing, footwear and accessories.

Allegations of unfair labor practices in China are certainly nothing new (even with a changing economic culture) and the affiliation with a major US figure with unfettered access to the President of the United States only adds more questions about this particular development.

In New York Times interviews Sunday and Monday outside the Huajian factory gate in Dongguan, some workers said they work 10 or more hours a day, six days a week.

A spokesperson for Ivanka Trump declined to comment for Bloomberg's story.

KUHN: "The workers all wanted to leave", he says, "but they couldn't because if they did, they'd be fired".

Li says he's going to submit his video footage to Ivanka Trump's company.

Police said she had a blood-alcohol level over 08 percent, which is the legal limit. They were working to confirm evidence suggesting that student interns - some of whom allegedly quit in protest - were putting in excessive hours on work unrelated to their field of study, in violation of Chinese law, Li said. "It is the local dialect being used as management language", she said. "I said Papa would come home soon and buy you toys". Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to a press release.
