'Covfefe' kerfuffle: Trump's typo sparks a search for meaning, and humor

That's right. Trump sent out the mysterious tweet shortly after midnight on Wednesday (May 31st), writing the weird word in the context of the sentence: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe".

Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas even got in on the act, joining the cacophany of voices on social media lampooning the so-called "Leader of the Free World" by applying meaning to the "word".

On Wednesday morning at around midnight, President Donald Trump gifted the internet with what can only be described as a peculiar and very Trumpian tweet: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe".

The dictionary's official Twitter account routinely goes after politicians and celebrities when they use words or phrases that are incorrect, confusing, or nonsensical.

"The #covfefe stuff is amusing, but everyone gets that this is one way Trump will detract from some really bad news for him last night, yes?" she tweeted.

Amidst hype over the tweet Wednesday, a White House official confirmed reports that the president was expected to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate agreement, a 195-nation pact to take action against global warming.

The response prompted the LIRR to delete the tweet, said spokesman Aaron Donovan.

Who can figure out the true meaning of "covfefe"???

Later on Wednesday morning, Trump wrote: "Who can figure out the true meaning of "covfefe"???".

Comments included a mock Google translation of covfefe from Russian into English as "I resign", and comments like "Drain the covfefe" - a play on Mr Donald Trump's promise to "drain the swamp" in Washington. Jimmy Kimmel lamented that he'll never write anything funnier than the term.

"CNN declared that "'Covfefe' tells you all you need to know about Donald Trump".

"It shows how quickly and decisively the president is acting to strengthen alliances, to form new partnerships, and to rebuild America's standing in the world", Spicer said.

"Covfefe is a great word, period!"

He blew past follow-up questions about the meaning of covfefe.
