Fans stay after downpour at Coca-Cola 600

Not only did the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing vehicle have to start dead last because it couldn't get through the technical inspection line in time to qualify, but Larson powered his way up to the Top 5 only to wind up nearly exactly where he started.

Dillon won his first career Cup race and celebrated with his extended family in Victory Lane, thanking the fans for staying up so late and not apologizing for the number on the side of his vehicle.

Dillon closed racing's biggest day with the surprise victory, following Sebastian Vettel's win in Formula One's Monaco Grand Prix and Takura Sato's victory in the Indianapolis 500.

Final results and race stats are available at NASCAR's Race Center.

Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon took his maiden NASCAR Cup victory in the delayed race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday evening.

While there's a long way for Dillon's team to go, the win heartened everyone that better, more winning days, could be ahead. Leading with just over one lap left, the No. 48 auto ran out of gas, handing the lead over to Dillon, who had not led a lap since the season-opening Daytona 500.

Despite questions from Earnhardt fans about whether or not Richard Childress - Dillon's grandfather - should ever bring the auto back to the track, he was justified on Sunday. He also is a four-time victor of this very event.

Childress was being interviewed after the race when he looked up at the scoring pole in the Charlotte infield.

Dillon was one of three drivers who did not pit during the final round of green-flag stops and chose to take his chances on the fuel and tires he had.

"I want to meet some of them in the parking lot", said Childress, sounding like a protective granddad. "And I am glad to add to the legacy of it".

What went from another Martin Truex Jr. invitational, dominating, yet, again another Coca-Cola 600, Dillon and Jimmie Johnson attempted to stretch their fuel to the finish to steal a victory from the Toyota camp.

"It hasn't sunk in".

"I was just trying to be patient with the No. 48", Dillon said. "We're in the chase, baby".

Keselowski was considered one of the favorites to win the race.

Truex took the lead for the final time with 67 laps left, sweeping past Busch to move out front. Truex pitted a final time with 33 laps left, confident hed be able to hold on after everyone cycled through a last stop. Drivers on newer tires, led by Truex and Busch, caught those who stayed out, except Johnson and Dillon, in just a few laps.

"This place is tough", he said. It was enough to spoil what would have been his third win of the year, and send him plummeting down the leaderboard.

(9) Clint Bowyer, Ford, 400. The rest of the top 10 finishers were Kyle Busch, Truex, Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Erik Jones, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Johnson ran out of gas less than three miles from the finish because Dillon forced him to drive harder than he wanted.

"I did all that I could from that point and just came up a little bit short", he said.

Here's how the top 10 finished.

The Coca-Cola 600 is set to take place later tonight. Kyle Larson crashed out of the event on lap 293, hitting the outside wall hard.
