Trump expected to delay US embassy move to Jerusalem

The issue of President Trump chasing down the "ultimate deal" in a regional peace agreement is not new.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the major stumbling blocks.

Within days of capturing East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, Israel was examining options about their future ranging from Jewish settlement-building to the creation of a Palestinian state.

Symbolic recognition of Israel's claims to its ancient capital would place the U.S.at odds with much of the worldwide community, particularly most of the very countries whose leaders Trump sought to rally against terrorism in Riyadh less than a fortnight ago.

Aloul told Voice of Palestine radio that the U.S. embassy would not be moved to Jerusalem and that East Jerusalem will become the capital of the independent Palestinian state.

Signing the waiver this week would forestall any move for another six months.

On the campaign trail, Trump's pro-Israel rhetoric raised expectations that he would act quickly to move the embassy.

Some of Trump's top aides have pushed for him to keep his campaign promise, not only because it would be welcomed by most Israelis but to satisfy the pro-Israel, right-wing base that helped him win the presidency.

Palestinian officials have in the past promised a violent response to an embassy move. "It's not a question of whether but when it will be done".

The last three administrations issued six-monthly national security waivers rather than comply with a 1995 law recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and stating that "the United States Embassy in Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999".
