Hamilton exceeds Mercedes' expectations with fightback to P7 in Monaco

It was mooted as being the case earlier in the season but Monaco showed, despite Ferrari's best attempts to deny it, that the German four-time World Champion, Sebastian Vettel has priority at the Scuderia. This was such an intense race.

Asked if he understood why his teammate was clearly so unhappy, Vettel said: "Obviously. we were right behind each other".

The triple world champion is 25 points behind the German, who is himself chasing his fifth title and has been the dominant of the two drivers, winning three of the six races so far this season. As a result, he lost out big time when it came to strategy. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) +5.517s 5.

Hamilton finally came in after 45 laps from sixth, rejoining seventh, but Vettel was out of sight, nine seconds down the road and clear of Raikkonen, with Ricciardo a further five seconds adrift in third.

Sebastian Vettel produced a dominant performance to lead a Ferrari one-two ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and extend his championship lead over Hamilton to 25 points.

Verstappen's response on the team radio was succinct.

The Ferrari driver rarely says much, yet the quietest man in Formula One felt the need to speak up after being on the receiving end of what seemed like clear team orders favoring his teammate Sebastian Vettel. "It is one of those races when you hope to get more". A stark contrast to the way the Australian was feeling on Saturday when his team sent him out for qualifying in traffic. A trip into the barriers on Thursday afternoon gave his team more re-building work to do, and he again failed to make any kind of headway in the race, falling well behind Felipe Massa - who himself was way off the pace.

"This vehicle now is not working every single race we go to".

It comes as Sky Sports F1 expert Pete Gill described Ferrari's treatment of its veteran driver during the race as "chastening, debilitating". He consoled him at the post-race interviews. Before the Italian national anthem played out in all its jauntiness, he could barely be bothered to lift his second-place trophy in the air. "It is one of those days".

Button received a 15-place grid penalty after McLaren were forced to make unscheduled power unit changes to the British driver's auto.

In a race with plenty of sunshine and minimal overtaking, late crashes ensured the safety vehicle made its traditional Monaco appearance.

Kimi stood unimpressed as Vettel laughed on the podium and then unenthusiastically shook his bottle of oversized champagne alongside an elated Daniel Ricciardo (who placed third) and the victor.

"The safety vehicle almost ruined my race", said Ricciardo. "We'll be sure to push those red cars hard next time out in Canada".

'It's a hard one and there are so many things we need to look into to understand why one auto will make it work and the other won't'.
