APN welcomes Trump's signing of the Jerusalem Embassy Act's presidential waiver

Pro-Israel activists, Jewish and non-Jewish, have been relatively quiet about President Trump's decision to sign a waiver postponing the relocation of the Us embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

President Trump acted correctly by resisting the temptation to make good on his past populist statements. "The delay in the transfer of the embassy actually makes it hard for real peace because it fosters a false expectation among the Palestinians to divide Jerusalem, which will never happen".The White House insisted, however, that the decision, which is sure to disappoint Israel's US supporters, did not mean Trump was abandoning the goal of eventually shifting the embassy to Jerusalem.

Forestalling the embassy move could help Trump who has repeatedly expressed his interest in pursuing a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians - a task that has long thwarted past U.S. administrations and one which Trump has dubbed "the toughest deal in the world".

The statement further accused Trump's decision of breaking his campaign promise and driving peace away.

President Donald Trump will eventually move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, predicts a pastor and ally of the president.

Ambassador Dr. Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian representative to the United States, said the Trump policy "gives peace a chance".

Palestinians want East Jerusalem-including the Old City and its sites holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians-to become the capital of their eventual state.

"We are ready to start the consultation process with the USA administration".

"This decision is a reflection of the U.S. administration's keenness to make peace and build bridges of trust with partners especially after the successful Riyadh Summit and the meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and Trump".

A USA official speaking on condition of anonymity stressed that "it's a question of when, not if" the embassy will move but that Trump "doesn't think the timing is right".

In his meeting with the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Bethlehem last week, he reiterated his commitment to helping resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - although he is reported to have shouted at the Palestinian leader over one of the main issues in the talks. "The question is not if that move happens, but only when", Spicer said in the statement, according to the political news website Politico.

Yesterday President Donald TTrump, in keeping with his predecessors, waived the provisions included in the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act, maintaining the embassy in Tel Aviv and avoiding a break - symbolic or otherwise - with seventy years of U.S. policy.

Jordanian government spokesman Mohammed Momani said Thursday that "we strongly welcome the decision and highly value the message it is sending".

During his campaign, Trump had promised to move the embassy in Israel to Tel Aviv, but he backtracked from that decision after he assumed office. But every president since 1995 has signed the suspension order at intervals of six months.

Israel captured East Jerusalem - including the Temple Mount - during the June 1967 war. Progressive group J Street, which favors a two-state peace deal with the Palestinians, welcomed the delay of a move that could imperil efforts to find a deal on the status of the city negotiated between Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, but the Palestinians claim east Jerusalem for the capital of a future state.
