Canadian official blames parents' 'reckless behavior' in girl's sea lion attack

Canadian official blames parents' 'reckless behavior' in girl's sea lion attack

A video that is going viral shows a group of people standing by a dock, feeding what appears to be a cute and harmless California sea lion in Richmond, British Columbia, Mashable reports. "And then it came back up a second time, but this time grabbing the girl by the waist and dragging her down into the water".

Little else is known about the man or the little girl as they soon left the dock. When the little girl sits near the water, the animal jumps up, tugs at her clothes and pulls her into the ocean.

Alert family members quickly fished the startled girl out of the water unharmed. They say doctors might not know about the specific course of treatment that would be required, and want the family to reach out so they can ensure she gets the help she needs. "I hope the little girl's okay", he said.

The sea lion does not make another appearance as both the man and the girl emerged from the water completely drenched.

She said a lot of tourists on Canada's Pacific coasts make the mistake of feeding wild animals, even bears.

Meanwhile, CBC also quoted Steveston Harbour Authority Robert Kiesman as saying there had been signs around the area warning people not to feed the sea mammals there.

The dramatic video was captured by university student Michael Fujiwara, who uploaded the footage to YouTube.

"There were no injuries or anything, everything was good but everyone was pretty shocked", Fujiwara said.

Trites says the sea lion in the video looks like it is used to having people feed it. "They're not trained to be next to people".

As the girl leaned over the dock, the creature grabbed her by the dress and pulled her under. "They were probably very shaken up and just wanted to get away from the sea lion as fast as possible". However, they are wild animals and the public should keep their distance.
