House Intelligence Committee Issues Subpoenas for Michael Cohen and Michael Flynn

The subpoenas were expected to be delivered to retired Army General Michael Flynn, who was sacked as national security adviser by Trump in February, and the president's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, the sources said.

While the Senate committee awaits documents from Mr Flynn, Mr Putin and Mr Trump dismissed the u.s. intelligence community's conclusion that the Kremlin interfered in the 2016 presidential election by hacking Democratic emails.

Earlier Tuesday, the AP reported, citing a congressional aide, that the House intelligence committee had subpoenaed Cohen.

"We hope and expect that anyone called to testify or provide documents will comply with that request, so that we may gain all the information within the scope of our investigation".

"While we anticipate interviews to begin shortly, we have agreed that the pace of those interviews will be dictated by the needs of the investigation and not the preferences of outside parties", he said in a statement.

The House and Senate Intelligence Committees continue to press ahead in their investigations, even as a newly-appointed independent special counsel takes over the Justice Department and FBI investigations into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

On Tuesday, the president re-tweeted an article citing unnamed sources defending his son-in-law, Jared Kusher, who remains at the center of the FBI's investigation into Russian Federation.

President Donald Trump says celebrity Kathy Griffin "should be ashamed of herself" for appearing in a video holding what looked like Trump's bloody, severed head. Kushner is under scrutiny in the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

The news comes as Mr Trump's communications director has quit after just three months in the role. Trump has denied any wrongdoing. All of the subpoenas were signed by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Tulare), had approved three subpoenas without their knowledge.

Three other subpoenas tied to the Russian Federation investigation were issued by the House panel for information related to so-called "unmasking" of some Trump associates' names appearing on classified reports during the Obama administration, said officials with knowledge of the subpoenas. While Nunes has recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation due to his handling of classified information, he has not recused himself from the unmasking probe.

Nunes subsequently admitted he had received the information in the White House complex, explaining it was the only safe place to examine the classified material.

The congressional inquiry into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation has advanced beyond formal requests for information from Trump aides. Officials only "unmask" the identities of Americans for certain reasons - for example, if the name of a person is needed to understand the intelligence being provided. The subpoenas ask the CIA, FBI and NSA to provide information about requests to "unmask" redacted names of USA persons in intelligence reports.

Flynn was forced to resign when it was reported in February that he had spoken to the Russian ambassador about U.S. sanctions and then misled Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts. And in a Tuesday tweet he charged: "Russian officials must be laughing at the United States & how a lame excuse for why the Dems lost the election has taken over the Fake News".

Last week the focus of the campaign against Trump's supposed "softness" toward Russian Federation shifted to Jared Kushner, his closest White House adviser and son-in law. Mueller was appointed as special counsel by Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein on May 17. Andrew Weissmann had been head of the criminal division's fraud section since 2015.

Also Wednesday, a Justice Department official confirmed that Mueller had named a top Justice Department official to his team.
