Severe Cyclone Mora hits Bangladesh coast

Authorities in the affected districts of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong evacuated 450,000 people in advance of Cyclone Mora, officials said.

While Bangladesh is still recovering from the flash floods that hit its northeastern parts in April, affecting millions of people, the cyclone has just added to the tragedy. "When the storm came we rushed to local schools to take shelter", he said.

The district is home to 300,000 Rohingya refugees, most of whom live in flimsy makeshift camps after fleeing persecution in Rakhine State.

Shamsul Alam, a Rohingya community leader, told Reuters that damage in different camps was severe with nearly all the 10,000 thatched huts in the Balukhali and Kutupalong camps destroyed.

"Now we are giving them medical treatment", Eastern Naval Command spokesman Commander C.G. Raju told AFP."We are planning to send a rescue aircraft to look out for more survivors".

The department had warned the low-lying areas of likely to be inundated by the cyclone upto 4-5 ft of the level beyond normal.

Bangladesh has offered the Rohingya "refuge, but not acceptance", as Sullivan put it.

In predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, where Rohingyas are officially denied citizenship and classified as illegal immigrants, about 120,000 of them have been internally displaced by communal violence over recent years and are living in camps.

A tropical storm lashed southern Bangladesh on Tuesday, destroying hundreds of poorly built homes in some remote islands in the Bay of Bengal, officials said.

"The winds are strong and people there live in flimsy structures, so we're anxious".

He said efforts to assess the full extent of the damage had been hampered by disruption to telecoms links.

Mora is the equivalent of a strong tropical storm and will bring winds around 100 kilometers per hour as it moves onshore, said CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

Latest weather forecast said, the cyclone would influence rain accompanied by temporary gusty winds at most places of Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rangpur & Rajshahi divisions. They had initially planned to make one million people leave their villages.

At least six people were killed as Cyclone Mora slammed the Bangladesh coastlines after making landfall in the country's southeastern region on Tuesday morning.

It comes after heavy rains in Sri Lanka caused floods and landslides that killed at least 180 people.

The Indian Navy has rescued 27 people in a major operation in Bangladesh which has been hit hard by Cyclone Mora, causing widespread destruction and rendering millions of people homeless.
