UN Security Council expands sanctions against North Korea

He also said he thought Beijing ultimately would see Kim Jong Un's regime as a liability rather than an asset.

In a speech after the vote, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley said "the Security Council is sending a clear message to North Korea today: Stop firing ballistic missiles or face the consequences".

North Korea on Saturday reacted to the United States' successful missile interceptor test over the Pacific Ocean on May 30.

Speaking about Taiwan, Mattis said that "the Department of Defense remains steadfastly committed to working with Taiwan and with its democratic government" to provide it with necessary defensive articles, which is consistent with the USA obligation set out in the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA).

In opening remarks, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull expressed disappointment over Trump's recent withdrawals from both the Paris Climate Accord and the Trans Pacific Partnership - a multilateral trade deal that was supposed to bind the U.S. economically with 12 other Asian nations.

He condemned the country's "indisputable militarization" of manmade islands in a contested area of the South China Sea.

China's Premier Li Keqiang said on Friday that China is opposed to Pyongyang's missile launches and will support any new United Nations sanctions against the country.

But in Singapore Gen Mattis also struck a positive note on U.S.

Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada meanwhile told the conference that North Korea has improved its ability to operate its ballistic missile forces and warned that the threats it posed to the region and the world "have now entered a new stage".

Dean says Russian Federation and China are both aware of the threats the North Korean weapons program could pose to peace, but the United States has "pushed the envelope" in this issue.

"The robust, long-standing Japan-U.S. alliance now functions as a public good that contributes to the peace and stability of the region", she said. "Rather, the order is based on principles that were embraced by nations trying to create a better world and restore hope to all".

Defence Secretary's comments came shortly after the UN Security Council had expanded targeted sanctions against North Korea in response to a series of missile tests conducted by Pyongyang this year.

"Once we have exhausted all possible alternatives, the Americans will do the right thing", Mattis said.

"The Trump administration is encouraged by China's renewed commitment to work with the global community toward denuclearisation", he added.

"We can not accept Chinese actions that impinge on the interests of the worldwide community, undermining the rules-based order that has benefited all countries represented here today including, and especially, China", he told some 500 delegates at the Shangri-La Dialogue which focuses on defence and security.

"We seek a constructive, results-oriented relationship with China", the secretary said.

"For me, the troubling thing is I don't know what the strategic plan of the USA is", Cohen added.

"The interceptor that we flew yesterday certainly keeps pace with and I would actually say helps us outpace the threat through 2020", Jim Syring, the director of the MDA said.
