The white van then continued to drive to Borough Market where three men then left the vehicle and began to stab people in pubs and restaurants.

It is the third terror attack in the United Kingdom in three months following the auto and knife attack in Westminster in March, which left five people dead, and the Manchester bombing less than two weeks ago, in which 22 people were killed.

The attack in London's Borough Market and London Bridge area took place shortly after 10pm local time. Within eight minutes of receiving the first emergency call officers shot and killed the three suspected assailants.

The killings also occurred less than two weeks after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a pop concert by US singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

An eyewitness described how the devastating terror attack on London Bridge last night felt like Westminster was repeating all over again. "I threw something at them, maybe like a stool, a chair", he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

"We were in an Uber (taxi) going towards London Bridge and suddenly we saw people running".

At the same time, it was also hard for them to check into another place, as the hotels were warned by police to not take in new guests in order to not compromise the security of those already there, Boyko said.

Prime Minister Theresa May said that the "terrible incident" in London is being treated as a "potential act of terrorism".

"There were plainclothes officers, people off duty who were there helping the injured as well as tackling the terrorists".

Two French people were injured in the London attack which left six dead and almost 50 wounded, the French presidency said on Sunday, with one said to be in serious condition. In addition, as you know, we believe three suspects are dead.

Nick Brandon of British Transport Police said the force had received reports of "multiple" casualties in an incident possibly involving a knife and a vehicle.

"They were stabbing people".

Witnesses said people ran into a bar to seek shelter.

Borough Market, at the south end of the bridge, is a world-famous food hall and a trendy nightlife area always packed with revellers on a Saturday night.

The man stabbed a waitress hiding behind a partition.

"So we just ran across the bridge".

Khan called it "a deliberate and cowardly attack on innocent Londoners".

"We had the referendum, a change of government, the premature calling of a general election and in the days preceding the Manchester bombing we had a prime minister who had to change her party manifesto".
