Warren Gatland wants Lions to make themselves known to New Zealand public

With the Lions series being a topic high on New Zealand's media radar, SunLive thought it would be a great time to ask people in the community what they thought of the series.

The Lions next face the Blues at Eden Park on Wednesday.

Gatland was reluctant to name names when questioned about who had impressed.

It's never easy playing that first game.

Gatland now hopes the Lions can catch the New Zealand public cold across a series the home faithful fully expect to claim easily.

"Whoever they brought along would be really talented, highly experienced, and all seasoned professionals", the 29-year-old added. We were in New Zealand for over three months and played 26 games.

Hosting the Lions first up game is a major coup in Northland with the up to thirty thousand Lions fans expected to come to New Zealand during the duration of the Lions tour.

Lions coach Gatland said after the game that several members of his side were still dealing with jet lag, having arrived in the country only on Wednesday, and lacked cohesion due to a disrupted buildup before they left Britain. I'm not sure a lot of people in New Zealand watch the Pro12, the Aviva Premiership or even the Six Nations and as a result you don't know too numerous players.

That was one divisive squad, with much bickering between the mid-week and Saturday teams, and with two English players not mincing their words when writing their newspaper columns.

That trio started all three Tests for Wales against the All Blacks last summer and will support Alun Wyn Jones and Irishman Iain Henderson in the boiler room.

In 1971 we were always aware of the competition for Test places and, although it was obvious certain players would not get a look-in barring injury, it was healthy and kept everybody on their toes.

"You've got to try and adjust as quickly as possible and we hope over the next couple of days that everyone gets into a cycle so as to feel fresh and acclimatised". We've learnt a lot tonight in terms of how tough it is to come to New Zealand, how motivated the teams are going to be against us. We got held up over the line about four times and if we're a bit more clinical and finish those opportunities then the game is reasonably comfortable.

Burly English midfielders Jonathan Joseph and Ben Te'o were mostly anonymous, running less than 40 first-half metres combined, while Sexton struggled.

A tough tour is bound to have its own tensions and pressures but Kiwi Gatland has stated his intention to keep a harmonious squad, unlike the one that toured Australia in 2001, also coached by a Kiwi, former All Blacks coach Graham Henry.
