Alleged Russian hack reveals a deeply flawed election system

The 25-year-old leaked the top-secret report to The Intercept, who subsequently published the classified material after victor allegedly sent it to the online news outlet by mail.

Winner's mother, Billie Winner-Davis, told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday she fears prosecutors will try to make an example of her daughters to show that they are not "going to tolerate leakers". Investigators then discovered that victor had emailed the Intercept from her work computer.

The arrest came shortly before The Intercept published an alleged May 5 intelligence report from the National Security Agency that describes two cyberattacks carried out by Russian government hackers that attempted to infiltrate USA voting systems a week before the 2016 presidential election. Her family knew nearly nothing about her work life, they said. "She's a patriot, and to see her maligned and slandered in the media is very disheartening".

The NSA report does not say whether the cyberattack effort had any effect on the election results.

Garrick's affidavit said he interviewed victor at her home Saturday and she "admitted intentionally identifying and printing the classified intelligence reporting at issue" and mailing it to the news outlet. "I hope that all of America is watching this so closely so that nothing happens".

"A lot of us think more information should be made public, but the solution can't be individuals putting out tidbits of information haphazardly without appreciating how much damage can be done". She used the hashtag #notmypresident several times. A list of documents that were seized from her was shared online by the DOJ.

Victor was among four million people who had access to top-secret files from different security agencies among the country. Gary Davis, her stepfather who traveled with family from Texas to Georgia to attend her court hearings, told the Times that the charges are "totally out of left field" for the family.

The document said Russian military intelligence "executed cyber espionage operations against a named USA company in August 2016 evidently to obtain information on elections-related software and hardware solutions, according to information that became available in April 2017".

According to the Justice Department affidavit, the reporter showed an Augusta, Ga. -based intelligence contracting company leaked documents he had received postmarked from Augusta, believing that firm might have been the source.

This report is just one in a series of leaks which have been taking place in the recent past causing a lot of embarrassment to United States intelligence agencies.

She was a contractor with Pluribus International Corporation, a company providing analytical and engineering services to the federal, defense, security, and intelligence community. "It's a rule that you don't ask", Winner's mother said.

The government claims that victor downloaded and printed a top-secret NSA report, removed the printed version of the report from her employer's premises, and then mailed it to The Intercept, a highly regarded global media outlet that exposes government wrongdoing.

Amber Smith of the Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Office said her office did not receive the phishing email.

BILLY-JEAN DAVIS: Her words to me were that she was really scared that they would make her disappear.

A judge has scheduled a hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court to determine whether to allow victor to be released on bond pending trial.

The 25-year-old's parents say they haven't talked with her much, but they know if she did released classified materials, she's ready to pay the price.

- Victor was a linguist in the US Air Force and speaks Pashto, Farsi and Dari, her mother said.

In affidavits filed with the court, Garrick of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said the government was notified of the leaked report by the news outlet that received it.

The Associated Press could not confirm the authenticity of the May 5 NSA document, which The Intercept said it obtained anonymously.
