Amazon terminates unlimited cloud storage option for Drive

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) no longer offers unlimited storage for its popular Amazon Drive cloud storage service, joining a growing number of similar services in nixing the not-too-popular option. This will happen even if you have less than 100GB stored, which means you could/should only be paying $11.99. However, Amazon has now made a decision to withdraw its unlimited storage plan with effect from June 8.

Redmond limited its "unlimited" offer to 1TB in late 2015, making Amazon the last of the gang to throw in the towel.

In case you don't have auto-renew turned on and have more than 1 TB of data in Amazon Drive, you'll have to choose one of the new plans on your own within 180 days.

Signing up for Amazon Drive gets you 5GB of storage for free and Prime members will continue to receive free and unlimited photo storage. Year-to-date, AMZN has gained 34.70%, versus a 9.48% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period. The original options were categorised simply as $11.99 a year for unlimited photos, or the $59.99 price tag for unlimited everything.

If you are an Amazon Drive user, you should visit your Manage Storage page to see how much storage you're now using.

Those who don't take action to switch to a new plan - and who are storing more data than their free storage quota - will find their account in "over-quota status" once their subscription expires, meaning they won't be able to upload additional files, and can only view, download, and delete content. Tech giants like Google, Microsoft and other have been charging for extra storage for several years but Amazon wants to beat them at their own game by keeping the prices fairly nominal.

Amazon Web Services, as we all know, is one of the most prominent public cloud service providers and this makes its cloud storage plans fall in line with its competitors.
