Bacsinszky, Ostapenko advance to French Open semis

Bacsinszky, Ostapenko advance to French Open semis

The elation of the 19-year-old was clear as the feat of her achievement began to sank in, after a 4-6 6-2 6-2 win over the 11th seed in just under two hours on court.

Bacsinszky defeated French local Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-4 on Tuesday after a rain delay, while Ostapenko bested Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-2 6-2.

The second semi-finalist Roland Garros-2017 was 27-year-old tennis player from Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky, which two years ago had already reached this stage of the tournament.

Braving those trials with a strong mind and fast feet, Bacsinszky beat back Kristina Mladenovic, 6-4, 6-4, bursting into the Roland Garros semifinals for the second time in the last three years.

After a delay of the best part of three hours, the teenager closed out the set on her serve to level.

Pierce, who is a WTA Finals ambassador, said: "Bacsinszky is older and more experienced but Ostapenko will likely be the one who comes out with a lot of energy".

"I knew", the 47th-ranked Ostapenko said, "I had to be aggressive all match".

"I actually didn't expect that it would be here in Paris, but I'm really happy it's here".

A short while after Jelena Ostapenko reached her maiden Grand Slam semi-final with a win over Caroline Wozniacki at Roland Garros on Tuesday, ex-Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli went to congratulate the Latvian teenager's coach Anabel Medina.

However, she lost her serve trailing 4-5 to hand the first set to Wozniacki.

The world No. 47 is the first Latvian woman to make the last four of a Grand Slam in the Open era.

Second seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic was set to take on sixth seed Dominic Thiem, while fourth seed and big favorite Rafael Nadal was set to face No. 20 Pablo Carreno Busta. It's where she says the "magic" first happened for her.

She faced in Timea Bacsinszky, however, another woman with an emotional back story, the kind of artistic game beloved of the French crowds, and from the French-speaking region of Switzerland. "I'm no longer feisty".

"We had all the seasons - a hurricane, sandstorm and nearly snow". And I'm still doing it now just for myself, the dancing.

Bacsinszky drew the ire of her French rival in Geneva after seeking medical help for a knee injury during a critical passage midway through the deciding set. Going in, she's tough to read, you don't really feel comfortable.

Following the match, Ostapenko, who fired 38 winners and improved to 4-0 lifetime against Wozniacki, spoke about a number of topic on her run in Paris: "Every match we played was a very tough match, because she's playing really well, and she's very consistent. Because to play semi-final of Roland Garros on your birthday, I think it's really nice", added Ostapenko.

With No. 30 Bacsinszky facing Ostapenko in the semifinals, that means one of the tournament's upset specialists will be playing for her first French Open championship.
