Indonesia may lose 50000 tourists because of Qatar crisis

The Arab states accuse Qatar of supporting extremism, a charge Doha firmly denies.

The Indonesian government is predicting that the recent severing of ties between several Arab countries and Qatar would deal a blow to the archipelago's tourism industry, with 50,000 expected tourists not showing up because of the crisis, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Late Tuesday night, the Jordanian government announced it was reducing its level of diplomatic representation in Qatar and cancelling the local registration for Al-Jazeera TV.

He says Qatar will need to close or limit its Al-Jazeera news network and stop funding extremists groups to end the crisis.

"Qatar is apparently to be more or less completely isolated and existentially targeted", he said, adding: "A further escalation serves no one".

Qatar long has denied funding extremists, although Western officials have accused it of allowing or even encouraging funding of Sunni extremists like al-Qaida's branch in Syria, once known as the Nusra Front.

The president's sharp critique of Qatar, which is home to a major USA military base, inserted Washington directly into the crisis that has pitted the tiny country against Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Qatar's leader, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, spoke by telephone overnight with his counterpart in Kuwait and, in order to allow Kuwait to mediate, chose to put off a planned speech to the nation, the minister said.

The United States Department of Defense on Tuesday contradicted President Donald Trump's tweets by praising the nation of Qatar for its "enduring commitment to regional stability".

The Gulf countries ordered their citizens out of Qatar and gave Qataris overseas 14 days to return home.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Bahrain and Yemen have suspended all diplomatic ties to gas-rich Qatar, halting flights to and from the country and ordering Qatari citizens to leave within 14 days.

There are also deep financial and business links between the two countries based on Qatar's leading role as a gas producer.

The fallout includes the UAE banning the port and docking area of Fujairah from being used by Qatari oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers for refuelling.

Riyadh on Monday also cut off the Qatari peninsula´s only land border, threatening the import of both fresh food and raw material needed to complete $200 billion worth of infrastructure projects for the controversial 2022 World Cup.

A Qatari official has said an ultimatum issued by Saudi Arabia and its allies for the emirate's citizens to leave is a violation of human rights that requires United Nations intervention. It said it ordered shipping agents not to receive any vessels owned by Qatari companies or Qatari nationals and not to unload any goods from Qatar. It has increasingly been sending flights over Iran and Turkey to avoid Saudi and Egyptian airspace.

Qatar has said it will not retaliate against the curbs.
