James Comey Statement Describes Unsettling and Awkward Meetings With Trump

On the eve of former FBI Director James Comey's highly anticipated testimony before the Senate intelligence committee, a new poll shows a majority of American adults have little trust in either Comey or President Donald Trump. "He is a good guy", Comey quoted Trump as telling him as they sat alone together in the Oval Office. In it, Comey says President Trump asked him for "loyalty" at a dinner in January and later in the Oval Office said he "hope [d] you can let" the investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn "go".

The president then made his demand for loyalty. Interference with the investigation could be considered obstruction of justice, a potentially impeachable offense, depending on how Congress interprets what transpired.

"I have been very loyal to you, very loyal; we had that thing you know", Trump told Comey, according to the written testimony.

Mr Comey claims Trump said: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go". In the worst light, James Comey's recollections could provide enough evidence to build a case that the president tried to interfere with a criminal investigation.

In a letter Trump wrote to inform him of his removal, Trump claimed Comey assured the president three times that he was not personally under FBI investigation.

Trump word on the issue isn't final: "Hawaii has become the first American state to pass environmental measures that adhere to the Paris climate agreement, just days after President Donald Trump announced the USA withdrawal from the worldwide pact".

In his Wednesday statement, Comey described his meetings with Trump one by one.

The statement details a series of interactions with Trump that Comey said made him uneasy and appeared to disregard the FBI's traditional independence from the White House. Given that Trump had previously told him on two occasions he'd like Comey to remain in that capacity, Comey suspected Trump was seeking a "patronage relationship".

The awkward moments - and the questioning of Trump's motives by Comey - keep coming after that.

The Senate committee posted Comey's opening statement a day early.

The Trump who emerges is the familiar persona from Trump's reality television career - a ham-handed operator who uses carrots and sticks to extract loyalty from subordinates.

That turns out to be the last meeting between Trump and Comey, but the two talk by phone at least twice more before Trump fires Comey on May 9.

The poll also found that 56% of respondents say they believe Trump is trying to interfere with the investigation into Russian interference into the 2016 United States election. "He asked what we could do to 'lift the cloud'". "I didn't move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed", Comey wrote. "We simply looked at each other in silence".

Comey writes up the whole exchange, and concludes: "It is possible we understood the phrase "honest loyalty" differently".

When prompted again on the subject of loyalty, Comey said he replied, "You will always get honesty from me". There was no thing, and no deal.

Then, in late March, Trump called Comey at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
