James Comey testimony: former Federal Bureau of Investigation director to go before Senate

Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee will mark his first public comments about the nine conversations he said he had with the president in the months before he was sacked - three face-to-face meetings and six phone calls.

"The president is pleased that Mr. Comey has finally publicly confirmed his private reports that the President was not under investigation in any Russian Federation probe", Marc Kasowitz wrote in a statement.

"I hope you can let this go", Trump told Comey during one Oval Office meeting, according to the memo, which was described to CNN by a source. But senators are still anxious to hear directly from Comey and to question him about details of his conversations with Trump and why he kept those details quiet for months.

While Comey's prepared remarks have already been released to the public-with talk of "hookers in Russia" and an awkward request for loyalty-the hearing still promises to be interesting to say the least.

Analysts said Comey, an intensely by-the-book, non-political law enforcer whose handling of a separate investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton a year ago nevertheless may have cost her the presidential election, was studiously avoiding accusing the president of a crime.

The exchange took place after a meeting between Trump and senior intelligence and homeland security officials, after which the President asked to speak to the FBI Director alone.

Blunt would not forecast his line of questioning, but he did say that he would be interested in Comey releasing an entire memo he said he wrote that February 14 meeting with Trump. Comey made clear his discomfort with the President's actions, saying it seemed as though Trump was trying to create a "patronage relationship" with him.

In that January meeting, Comey wanted to assure the incoming President that the FBI was not involved in a counter-intelligence investigation against him.

Assurances to an incoming president that he was not under federal investigation. Rosenstein criticized Comey for unfair treatment of Trump's former rival, Clinton, during the email server investigation. Trump's outside lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said Wednesday that the president feels "totally vindicated" by Comey's prepared testimony.

Washington is holding its collective breath ahead of Thursday's testimony of fired FBI Director James Comey.

Lawmakers said Thursday's hearing will focus on whether Trump was obstructing justice - the charge that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1973.

Among the Democrats, Rep. Kathy Castor said in a tweet that Trump's demand of a loyalty pledge "looks like obstruction", while Sen.

"I had understood the president to be requesting that we drop any investigation of Flynn in connection with his false statements about his conversations with the Russian ambassador in December", added Comey, who was sacked by Trump in early May.

In the four years Comey worked under Obama's administration, they only communicated directly twice.

But he called Trump's approaches "very concerning, given the FBI's role as an independent investigative agency".

Comey confirms that Trump himself was not under investigation.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director recorded at least one of those interactions in a written memo, the now-leaked contents of which paint a picture that some Democrats characterize as bordering on obstruction of justice.

'I mean, you know, I want to hear Jim say it, ' he said.

"Despite this sparseness", he wrote, "or maybe I should say because of it, it is the most shocking single document compiled about the official conduct of the public duties of any president since the release of the Watergate tapes".

The Post described Trump as "consumed, haunted and antagonized" by the FBI's investigation into possible collusion between his campaign aides and the Russian government and "spoiling for a fight" with Comey.
