Manchester City complete deal to sign goalkeeper Ederson from Benfica

Manchester City today completed the £35 million signing of Ederson Moraes from Benfica.

It is coach Pep Guardiola's latest attempt to settle City's goalkeeping situation, with Claudio Bravo failing to convince following his arrival from Barcelona past year and long-time keeper Joe Hart seemingly without a future at the English club after being sent out on loan last season. He's putting in place a young team for the future.

The club's Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, said: "We are delighted to bring Ederson to Manchester City".

Manchester City announced on Thursday that they have signed the former Brazil U-23 player from Portuguese club Benfica on a six-year contract. He conceded just 12 goals in 27 league appearances and caught the eye of City's scouts with his flexibility and, of course, his...

Official confirmation was subsequently delayed as those third-party issues were concluded to the satisfaction of the Premier League.

Ederson becomes the most expensive goalkeeper since Gianluigi Buffon joined Juventus from Parma for 53 million euros in 2001.

"So these were the factors that helped me take the decision to join this club".

Ederson added: "Manchester City is a club that has grown a lot under Guardiola".

According to Opta data, Ederson, Bravo and Caballero all made one error leading directly to a goal last season.

There seems to be a bit of the Manuel Neuer in him. He looks a very promising goalkeeper indeed, but I'm not sure what his English is like, so communication could be a problem.

Ederson has played for Brazil's Under-23 side but is yet to make his full global debut.

His arrival will place more pressure on Claudio Bravo, who has had a hard first season since arriving from Barcelona to take over from Joe Hart as City's number one. In March he told BBC Sport he was "surplus to requirements" at City and did not see himself playing for the club again.

Ederson is the second major signing of the close-season for City following their purchase of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva for a reported 43 million pounds ($55 million) from Monaco.
