Ocean Unfriends Team New Zealand In America's Cup

A New Zealand yacht has spectacularly capsized mid-race during the America's Cup in Bermuda.

Sir Ben Ainslie and his Land Rover BAR team were looking to take advantage of Emirates Team New Zealand's dramatic capsizing on Tuesday but wind speeds of more than 24 knots put paid to their hopes.

All six crew members were safe.

While the Kiwis maintain a firm 3-1 lead in the first-to-five series, this point will give Ainslie's British team a hopeful shot, though the extreme weather conditions are not to be underestimated.

Ben Ainslie, Skipper and Team Principal: "The most important thing is that everyone is okay on Emirates Team New Zealand after their capsize".

"In 30 years of racing I've never seen anything like that", skipper Ainslie, who has won four gold medals for Team Great Britain, said, according to Yahoo Sport UK. "It is unbelieveable how much energy is required to get around these courses, unfortunately for us we got low on oil at a critical time, so our manouvres weren't as crisp as they have could been".

"Tomorrow being a three-race day is a big day for all the guys, so we will definitely be rotating through our guys anyway and keeping in mind what the guys went through the other day".

Amazingly the crew managed to install a replacement in just 55 minutes and Emirates Team New Zealand made it to the start where neither boat wanted to engage in the gusts of wind sweeping across the Grand Harbour. "We've all got a few cuts and bruises, but nothing major". Nail-biting. Winds in excess of 20 knots, crossing speeds four times that, boats quite literally being torn to shreds on Bermuda's normally tranquil Sound.

"I'd liken it to skiing on ice". When it works, when you're sailing these boats fast and well, it's incredibly rewarding.

The winners of the series are set to progresses to the challenger final and whoever wins that takes on defending champions Team USA for the America's Cup itself.

SoftBankTeam Japan open up a 3-1 lead by winning both races on day 2 (June 6) in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Challenger Playoffs semi-finals.
