Sacked FBI director James Comey to testify Trump pressed him for loyalty

Mr Comey may also detail other conversations with Mr Trump. Others claim Comey's testimony is a nothingburger.

A direct ask on Flynn. Today the nation gets to hear those accounts from Comey's own lips, including Trump's request on February 14 about former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn, fired the previous day. He met privately with Trump in the Oval Office on February 14, one day after Flynn was sacked.

On Tuesday, Trump was asked what his message for Comey would be.

On top of Trump insisting that Flynn hadn't done anything wrong and that he had "been through a lot", Comey recalls Trump asking him point blank: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".

It is not clear what, exactly, Christie saw as "normal" Manhattan gab on the part of Trump.

Unsaid, but strongly implied, is that Comey, a former federal prosecutor, had a bad feeling about Trump from the beginning and wanted to have contemporaneous records of their dealings in case things went south.

Comey stays behind in a conference room to speak privately with Trump after intelligence officials brief the president-elect in his NY headquarters about explosive findings that the Russians tried to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

And just a week before he was sacked - Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he chose to publicly announce his findings in the Clinton email investigation after watching Bill Clinton board a plane with then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Comey confirmed in the written testimony that he had told Trump that he was not personally under investigation. So at least through April 11.

Former FBI chief James Comey is to tell Congress President Donald Trump wanted a "patronage relationship" and that he asked for his "loyalty".

The White House initially said Trump fired Comey on the recommendation of the Justice Department, citing as justification a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that criticized Comey's handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

Several congressional committees, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a special counsel, are investigating whether Russian Federation tried to tilt last November's election in Trump's favor, using means such as hacking into the emails of senior Democrats.

But Trump could still be under investigation in the future. Comey did not tell the president something: That he could later *become* under investigation.

"The FBI and the Department of Justice had been reluctant to make public statements that we did not have an open case on President Trump for a number of reasons, most importantly because it would create a duty to correct, should that change", Comey says in the prepared remarks.

Their three one-on-one meetings are a study in the arts of implied pressure, passive-aggressive resistance, awkward silences and conversation exit strategies. The last: April 11.

The loyalty pledge happened.

To say Comey's outing this morning has been eagerly anticipated would be quite to understate the matter. And Comey describes the president making an explicit demand for personal loyalty - "I need loyalty. We agreed I should do so if circumstances warranted", Comey wrote.

"Yeah, no, I mean obviously I don't think that is" appropriate, Ryan said. He didn't want to infect the ongoing F.B.I. investigation and 2.

Comey's testimony - released Wednesday afternoon before senators headed into a classified briefing with Coats - jibes with reports that Trump wanted Coats and Rogers to publicly rebut Russian Federation stories.

Mr. Comey's testimony, - scheduled to start at 10 a.m. EDT (7.30 p.m. IST) - in the most widely anticipated congressional hearing in years will put the spotlight on whether Mr. Trump's comments about the Russian Federation investigation were an attempt to obstruct the FBI probe that has dogged his five-month-old presidency.
