Shenmue III won't be coming out until the second half of 2018

"Shenmue III started with you, the project backers".

Shenmue 3 developer Ys Net has posted a new update on the game's Kickstarter page to announce that the release target has been pushed to the second half of 2018. It's been nearly two years since we started this incredible endeavour together.

In the official announcement, Yu Suzuki explains that over the course of development, new possibilities have come to light, so more time is needed: "By utilizing new technologies, we have been able to discover new possibilities and expressions".

Creator Yu Suzuki made the announcement via the game's Kickstarter blog, where he said that, 'The game has become bigger and more handsome than I initially expected.

There's nothing quite like E3 season when it comes to weeding out which games are developing smoothly and which titles need more time.

Further details of the updated development schedule will be in the next Shenmue 3 backer report.

Thank you very much for your understanding and continued support.

Shenmue 3 was announced with fanfare during Sony's E3 2015 press conference two years ago. They have also increased his team's development time. The game is expected for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

The announcement came from Yu Suzuki via a short video message, and as expected the reason mentioned for the delay was: development team need more time to deliver the game, it has become bigger and more attractive than initially expected. In the meantime, there are rumours surrounding a Shenmue 1 & 2 re-release, so maybe we'll see that arrive a bit sooner.
