Trump taps Christopher Wray as new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

The Senate Intelligence Committee posted Comey's explosive seven-page statement on its website Wednesday afternoon, ending speculation about what Comey would say to the panel on Thursday.

The White House said Monday it would not invoke executive privilege over Comey's upcoming testimony - officials predicted it would look bad otherwise.

In an advance copy of his written testimony released on Wednesday, Comey said Trump privately asked him to drop an investigation of his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as part of the Russian Federation inquiry.

Comey states Trump invited him to dinner January 27, and it ended up just being the two of them.

For the last 150 or so days, Trump has lurched from crisis to crisis, tweeting away his public support and increasingly alienating allies who hold his political fate in their hands.

Sen. Chris Coons of DE says, "I think we have to be careful about making legal conclusions" and argues that lawmakers should not be "getting in the way" of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur). He said Trump could say he was merely vouching for Flynn's character and voicing concerns about how the probe was interfering with his ability to function as president. Some may attempt to divert attention from Comey's remarks about Trump by focusing on two issues they've repeatedly seized on: leaks and revealing the names of Americans in intelligence reports. According to Comey, he offered "honesty" as the duty owed to the president, before eventually agreeing on "honest loyalty" as an ambiguous compromise.

Somewhere in the White House, an aide to President Donald Trump has stuffed the president's cellphone and other devices under a pillow in a distant room, or perhaps behind the Roosevelt china.

He says Mr Trump called the Russian probe "a cloud" over him.

Trump is widely expected to use his Twitter account, which lists 31.8 million followers, to counterpunch at Comey on Thursday - perhaps even in real time.

"Trump reportedly told Comey: "[Flynn] is a good guy and has been through a lot.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. I hope you can let this go".

"That's going to be a topic for lawyers", he said. Precisely because he has been removed as Federal Bureau of Investigation director, he is newly free to tell the story of his interactions with Trump - which could themselves prove damning, or slight. "And second, the President effectively asked the Director to drop the investigation of his former National Security Advisor. That was true; we did not have an open counter-intelligence case on him", Comey said in his statement. Comey and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper were among those in attendance.

But here's the key fact that Trump's defenders are rather hilariously forgetting: yes, you can see Trump's interaction with Comey as being in artful but harmless... While the dossier contained information that "was salacious and unverified", the intelligence community felt Trump had a right to know. Comey's reassurance to Trump followed his consultation with the leadership team.

Comey's opening statement is very narrowly focused on his interactions with President Trump, but there are other players he mentions, notably Attorney General Jeff Sessions. But he said he didn't hear back from Boente before Trump called him April 11. Comey reassured Trump, for the third time, that he was not personally a target of the investigation, and Trump repeated a request that the FBI director make that known publicly.

"The express discussion of loyalty is disconcerting", and could heighten speculation that the "president was trying to exert some pressure or at least exert some influence over the Russian Federation investigation", Gerhardt said.

  • Do Comey's new revelations show obstruction of justice?

Comey said Trump said he would "have his people" reach out to Boente, and that he told the President that was the way to go. Some said Comey's statement was even something of a relief because it did not contain any bigger surprises.
