United Kingdom universities falling in world rankings table

Only 3.9 per cent of new students were from places other than the mainland or Hong Kong, the auditor found, adding universities should attract more overseas students.

U.S. News and World Report ranked Georgia Tech number 66 for 2017, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings a year ago had Georgia Tech as number 33.

"It now needs to investigate every single other United Kingdom university which claims it is in the top one per cent in the world, rather than waiting for individual complaints to be made", he said of the ASA.

Aberdeen University is down 17 places from 141 to 158 this year.

The QS World University Rankings also shows that the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) dropped from the 601-650 range to 701-750. "It is created to reflect the nuanced mission of universities, and the needs of students who may be interested in things other than those to which traditional rankings are necessarily limited", QS said.

The Singapore Management University was placed in the 441-450 category in 2017. Much of the data we collect for these tables has been collected over a five-year period, and the first year of post-Brexit internationalisation scores suggests that there has, thus far, been a minimal impact on global student and faculty rates at United Kingdom institutions.

Universities New Zealand executive director Chris Whelan said domestic institutions did well in research and global connections.

Stanford, Harvard and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) also beat United Kingdom universities.

The highly prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology continues to secure its top position in the World's Best 300 universities for a record sixth consecutive year, which is then followed by Stanford University, Harvard University, California Institute of Technology, and Cambridge.

However, UST is the only university among the four from the Philippines on the list to have obtained four QS Stars.

As a whole, however, Irish university rankings have declined in recent years.

"Our rankings are a direct reflection of our ability to challenge, inspire and prepare our students to be future leaders", says Professor Quigley.

The rankings were based on the opinions of more than 75,000 academics and more than 40,000 employers, and analysis of 12.3 million papers and 75.1 million citations.

"Our universities are young and we are in a young country, but our universities are very well known for training students and producing high quality research on an extremely large scale that is well regarded internationally".

There are 76 United Kingdom universities in the global rankings, but the compilers say 51 of them are in a lower place than past year.
