Blast at Indian fireworks factory triggers deadly blaze

Twenty workers were charred to death and 10 others were injured, two of them critically, in a fire at a cracker factory in Kheri village in Balaghat district yesterday afternoon, an official said.

The death toll from an explosion at a firecracker factory in central India has risen to 25, an official said on Thursday, after five workers died overnight.

He said of the five other injured persons, three are being treated outside the state and two at a local hospital.

The death toll is expected to reach at least 40 in a few hours, as numerous injured remain critical.

The cause of the fire was not clear, but it was likely triggered after a worker threw a lit cigarette butt in the premises.

He added that the victims were workers of the factory and the incident took place when the production was on. "The post-mortem on the bodies have been conducted and then samples from the spot were also collected".

Shivraj Singh Chauhan, chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, announced a compensation of around $3,000 for the families of the deceased.

Yadav said the factory was located away from the human settlement.

Sanghi said an FIR has been lodged under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code that deals with culpable homicide against factory owner Waheed Ahmed Warsi, who was absconding.
