James Comey Says He Leaked Trump Memo Through Columbia Law Professor

What could put the president in hot water with Special Counsel Robert Mueller now are his alleged attempts to lean on Comey to end the FBI's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Kasowtiz's claim came in response to fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's testimony earlier in the day before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Judge Napolitano said that as a friend of Trump, he is deeply concerned after Comey's testimony, calling it "damning".

"The President also never told Mr. Comey, 'I need loyalty, I expect loyalty, ' in form or substance", said Kasowitz in his statement.

"Mr. Comey's testimony also makes clear that the President never sought to impede the investigation into attempted Russian interference in the 2016 election", his attorney Marc Kasowitz said.

She told reporters on Thursday afternoon: "In terms of the mood in the White House, I would say that it's a regular Thursday at the White House".

Despite the allegations, Trump's personal lawyer said Wednesday that the president was "pleased" with Comey's statement that he himself was not under investigation.

During his five-minute round of questions, Rubio also pressed Comey to clarify that he perceived Trump's "let this go" request as being limited to Flynn rather than the broader investigation of Russian influence. As he said yesterday, the President feels completely vindicated and is eager to continue moving forward with his agenda with this public cloud removed.

Comey was sacked on May 9, when Trump expressed his deep frustration with the continuing probe into whether members of his presidential election campaign had tied up with Russian hackers against the billionaire tycoons rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton. Noting that he is "strong", Feinstein asked Comey why he didn't say, "Mr. President, this is wrong".

Wearing a suit and a blue checked burgundy tie, Comey started his testimony by describing how he was let go by Trump, which he knew was the president's prerogative, but that the "shifting" explanations for why he was terminated "confused me and increasingly concerned me".

"Because what I won't want to do is in the middle of a House Intelligence Committee investigation, a Senate Intelligence Committee investigation, now an independent counsel, is to speculate on the day-to-day intrigue of all of these issues", he said.

Comey said he made a decision to use a go-between because he was anxious about the increased media scrutiny the memo was likely to bring.

Comey in testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, said that after he was sacked by Trump, he leaked notes of his conversations with the president to the media through a friend in the hopes it would lead to the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Comey said that he declined to do so in large part because of the "duty to correct" that would be created if that situation changed.

"He had repeatedly told me I was doing a great job and he hoped I would stay", Mr Comey said.

Mr. Comey said he recorded his recollection of this and other conversations with the President given the unusual combination of factors surrounding them and thinking that a "day might come when I will be requiring those records". Rosenstein, who was aware that Comey was about to be fired, authored the memo that the White House used in the firing.

Trump was scheduled to speak at a conservative religious conference at 12:35 pm ET while Comey's hearing began at 10 a.m. ET.

Fired FBI Director James Comey's much-hyped testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee was the rare Washington hearing that actually lived up to its billing. Trump then claimed it was, in part, due to the FBI's continuing investigation into connections between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.
