Rahul Gandhi detained trying to defy ban orders in Madhya Pradesh

Commenting on Rahul Gandhi's remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the latter only knows to fire bullets at farmers and not to waive off their loans, BJP leader Zafar Islam said this kind of statement has no relevance with the prevailing situation in violence-hit Mandsaur district.

Before his detention, Gandhi charged the Narendra Modi government with writing off the loans of rich industrialists to the tune of Rs 1,50,000 crore but did not waive the loans of poor farmers. "What law of the land says that it is illegal to stand in solidarity with farmers who were killed simply for demanding what is their right?"

Farmer outfits of Punjab have chose to hold protests across the state on June 12 against the killing of five farmers in police firing in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh during a stir for better farm produce prices.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered a judicial enquiry into the deaths of five farmers during the recent agitation.

The killings took place on Tuesday at Pipaliamandi area in Mandsaur district, about 325 km west of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. We have full sympathy for them and also want meet the affected families. "He can only give them bullets".

The BJP-ruled Maharashtra saw the highest number of suicides in 2015-16 and Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh accounted for 6,535 (51.85 per cent) of total farmers' suicides in 2015, it said.

Accusing the Congress party of firing from the shoulders of the farmers, Rao further said that grand old party is responsible for giving a violent turn to entire Mandsaur incident. For most small farmers, the expenditure is way more than what they earn from their farm produce.

Madhya Pradesh is India's biggest producer of oilseeds and pulses and No. 2 grower of wheat and corn, according to the agriculture ministry. "The demands we have are not for the state government, it is for the central government", he added.

The farmer protests had turned especially ugly on Wednesday, with several vehicles torched and buildings vandalised.

"There is information that some people were involved in instigating violence", Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Chief Minister Chouhan urged the farmers to maintain peace and vowed to resolve the crisis through talks.

He warned "anti-social elements" for wanting to push the state into deep trouble.

Police had initially denied responsibility for the deaths of the farmers, who were armed only with rocks and stones, according to authorities.

While curfew continued in Mandsaur, except for a two-hour relaxation, incidents of arson were reported from Shajapur and Dhar districts in western part of the state on the eighth day of the agitation for loan waiver and better crop price.

Naidu's comments came shortly after the Congress vice president was detained in Neemuch by police for defying ban orders imposed in the violence-hit Mandsaur district where he wished to go in order to meet the grieving families of farmers had who lost their lives in the police firing.
