Trey Gowdy picked to lead House Oversight Committee

Trey Gowdy picked to lead House Oversight Committee

It was in his role as chairman that Gowdy helped uncover Clinton's use of a private email server to conduct State Department business, setting off a firestorm over whether the Secretary sent classified material over an unsecured network and flouted federal archiving requirements. Now Democrats wonder whether the South Carolina Republican will pursue President Donald Trump with the same vigor.

Representative Trey Gowdy, best known for investigating Hillary Clinton's response to the 2012 attack on US facilities in Benghazi, Libya, was picked by Republicans on Thursday to take over as chairman of a key House committee with a watchdog role over the Trump administration. In 2014 he was tapped to lead the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

Gowdy, in his fourth term representing upstate SC, is less senior than several Republican colleagues on the oversight panel but is well-liked by Ryan and other GOP leaders, with a high-profile earned as chairman of the select committee on Benghazi and a reputation as a sharp questioner.

Gowdy, 52, will succeed Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) as oversight chief beginning June 30, when Chaffetz's resignation goes into effect.

House Speaker Paul Ryan applauded Gowdy's appointment in a statement Thursday.

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-Springdale) applauded the selection of Gowdy. Gowdy is expected to be confirmed by the House next week.

GOP lawmakers trust Gowdy, "and he's going to do a fantastic job", Graves said.

"I don't think Paul Ryan is anxious about that streak of independence showing itself any time soon - and certainly not in the context of Donald Trump and the Russian Federation thing", he said. "He has proven that he will always look out for taxpayers and seek answers from the bureaucracy". "Trey has my absolute confidence, and I know he will do an outstanding job", Ryan said. He led the Benghazi inquiry after four Americans were killed in Lebanon on 9-11, 2012. The committee's 800-page report accused the Obama administration of lethal mistakes, but it produced no "smoking gun" pointing to wrongdoing by Clinton, even as Gowdy threatened to seek a federal investigation into whether she lied to the committee under oath in 2015.

Gowdy never officially announced a bid for the post, but he was considered a lock to get it ahead of the House GOP Steering Committee's meeting Thursday where the decision was made. "While Chairman Gowdy may face pressure from interest groups to overturn D.C. laws, his record makes me hopeful that he will stick to his principles and prior approach", Norton said in a statement.
