Wawrinka levels semifinal against Murray

Wawrinka levels semifinal against Murray

The other semi-final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's conqueror Dominic Thiem will follow at around 2.30pm.

Stan Wawrinka subjected Andy Murray to a barrage of body blows as he broke down the Briton's formidable defences to reach the French Open final on Friday, twice coming from a set down to win a high-octane contest 6-7 (6) 6-3 5-7 7-6 (3) 6-1.

Nadal, bidding for a 10th title at Roland Garros, was leading 6-2 2-0 when Carreno Busta decided he could not continue after receiving lengthy treatment for a left abdominal muscle injury at the end of the first set.

A gruelling third set ensued during which it looked as though the victor would surely go on to seal a place in the final.

"I tried to keep fighting, but he played well at the end", said Murray, the 2016 runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

"There are two ways of seeing things and I chose to be positive, knowing that I was dominating", said Wawrinka, who has won the three grand slam finals he has played. Breaking Murray three times in a row, Wawrinka used a seven-game run to take the second set, plus a 3-0 lead in the third.

It also piled the pressure back onto the 12-time Grand Slam victor to prove that he is still a contender at the majors following a second-round exit at the Australian Open in January.

Wawrinka levelled in the second stanza, although Murray found a way again in the third, giving the 2015 champion a mountain to climb. Unlike the first set, he won his subsequent service game to lead 5-3.

The fourth set however is the one Murray will rue.

Wawrinka booked his place in his fourth Slam final with another stylish backhand down the line victor.

The stats would suggest that Murray should be the favourite, given that he is the world number one and more significantly he beat Wawrinka at this exact stage of the competition a year ago.

Wawrinka lost a tight first set in a tie-break but levelled the match an hour later.

"It's incredible for me to make it back to the finals here again".

Alongside the third-seeded Halep was former tennis player Ion Tiriac, who won the doubles at Roland Garros in 1970, two years after reaching the singles quarterfinals.

Murray, who fended off a set point in the tiebreaker, made only 10 unforced errors to Wawrinka's 23.

Eurosport will broadcast the 2017 French Open live in the United Kingdom, both live on Eurosport 1 and 2 and Eurosport Player.

Rafael Nadal set up a French Open final meeting with Stan Wawrinka after a ruthless win against Dominic Thiem as he continues his chase for la decima.

I predict Nadal to win in five sets.

His opponent in the semifinals will be US Open champion Stan Wawrinka.

But make no mistake: Wawrinka does not discourage easily.
