9-time champ Nadal faces Wawrinka in French Open men's final

9-time champ Nadal faces Wawrinka in French Open men's final

The match is set for 8 a.m.

It is a first grand slam final defeat for the Swiss, who won the Australian Open in 2014, here two years ago and the US Open last summer. If I'm nervous, it will be more hard. "It's the most important tournament in my career and to win again is something I can't describe". "It's very emotional for me". "Then anything can happen, and I hope to be ready for that". In the head-to-head, Rafa leads 15-3 (83% wins - 17% wins).

The time has come to bring the curtain down completely on the 2017 European clay court season, and what a conclusion in store as Rafael Nadal targets La Decima with Stan Wawrinka standing in his way. In best-of-five matches on clay, Nadal is 102-2. He's going for his 10th Roland Garros, so it's something really impressive, something tough.

"For sure it's going to be really hard, but at the end of the day it's the final".

What lay in Nadal's favour is that he hasn't dropped a set in this tournament and has given away just 29 games so far, in his march to the final. "I think it helps Stan that he has won one here", he said, referring to Wawrinka's 2015 win over Djokovic. We both want to win the title, and we're both going to give it our all on the court.

"For sure he's going to be the favourite with what he's done in the past and how well he's been playing this season". It's the moment I have to be very happy. He's defeated Nadal before and was a ideal 3-0 in Slam finals.

It worked in Wawrinka's favor (as did his opponent's bad back at the time) when he beat Nadal in the 2014 Australian Open final.

Nadal won the first of his record nine Roland Garros titles in 2005 just two days after his 19th birthday, but Wawrinka has been a late developer. "To play against you is an honour".

Nadal won again at Roland Garros in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

WAWRINKA is bidding to win his 4th Grand Slam title and his 2nd at Roland Garros.

At 32, Wawrinka is the oldest men's finalist in Paris since 1973.

The men's final comes on the heels of an historic win Saturday in the women's final by unseeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, who beat No. 3 Simona Halep 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Still, a French Open win down the road wasn't out of the question.

Nadal made easy work of rising Austrian tennis sensation Dominic Thiem by registering a comprehensive straight set win in the semis to sail into the title clash.

Rafael Nadal swept the men's French Open final in straight sets Sunday, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, laying down an overwhelming performance Sunday against Stan Wawrinka. Rod Laver and Rosewall are the only men to have won 3 or more Grand Slam titles after turning 30.

French Open 2017 men's singles final between Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka is on Sunday, June 11. Then, Nadal delivered a furious combo of tennis punches to turn that tight 2-2 set into a 6-2 rout. Overall, he trails Margaret Court's all-time record of 11 titles at a single Grand Slam. Winds WSW at 10 to 15 miles per hour.
