Afghan commando fatally shoots 3 U.S. soldiers

Two U.S. soldiers were killed in eastern Nangarhar province in Afghanistan, an official of the provincial government said on Saturday.

And it's not the first time this year that one has occurred, as NBC News explains: "The attack follows one in March in which three American soldiers were shot and wounded by an Afghan soldier on a base in Helmand province, officials said".

Several American servicemen have been killed and injured after coming under fire in a "green-on-blue" attack in eastern Afghanistan, the Pentagon has announced.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid says in a statement that a Taliban loyalist had infiltrated the Afghan army "just to attack foreign forces".

This marked at least the second insider attack-known as a "green-on-blue" attack because of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation color-coding system-of the year.

An investigation was launched to determine the specific circumstances that led to the incident, the statement noted.

The latest insider attack also happened as U.S. President Donald Trump was reportedly mulling over increasing troop levels for Afghanistan.

Also Known as the "green-on-blue" attack, the insider attack, where an Afghan government solider or police fires on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation coalition forces, is one of the major problems facing coalition forces there.

The statement claimed the infiltrator managed to kill four U.S. troops before he was killed by Afghan soldiers.

Excluding these three soldiers, four U.S. troops have already died in Afghanistan in 2017, with three of them being combat casualties. USA soldiers there are fighting alongside their Afghan counterparts against Taliban and ISIS-affiliated insurgents.

"We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of the ABP members affected by this unfortunate incident", the statement said.

Insider attacks have also plagued Afghan troops, depleting morale and causing mistrust within security ranks. ABC News also reports that there are now 8,400 American troops still in Afghanistan training Afghan forces and helping them in military operations.

The Afghan conflict is the longest in American history, with US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops at war there since 2001, after the ousting of the Taliban regime.

The latest killings come at a time of intensified violence and when the United States is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan.
