Suspects in Manchester bombing freed without charge

The inquests into the deaths of the 22 victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack were told the improvised explosive device contained in the bag he was carrying on his back appeared to be "designed to kill and maim indiscriminately the largest number of innocent people".

"The remaining people have now been released without charge", detective chief superintendent Russ Jackson said in a statement published on Twitter of Greater Manchester Police.

They know he left the United Kingdom on 15 April, travelling to Libya before returning to the United Kingdom on 18 May.

Police also want to talk to Abedi's younger brother, Hashem, who left the country on the same day as his brother and is being detained in Libya.

He said the investigation will continue "as we work to understand the full extent of the involvement of anyone else". He said detectives were "satisfied" at the accounts offered for these purchases.

"Hashem Abedi is now detained in Libya, there is much media reporting about what he has said in Libya and we wish to interview him in relation to this attack".

Last week, Abedi's brother Hashem, 20, told Libyan investigators working alongside British police in Tripoli that he had helped his brother buy components for the bomb in the United Kingdom, but claimed not to know the details of his plan.

Police have searched 29 houses and found evidence of explosive materials at several locations, each with links to Abedi.

Officers also know that he tried to send money out of the United Kingdom in the days leading up to the bombing.

Officers are now appealing for information about the white Nissan Micra he used and a barrel stored inside the vehicle.

The statement adds: "We believe items were stored in it during that time, either materials to make a bomb or a pre-made charge".

"The search at the landfill site for the blue suitcase is also continuing and we expect it to go on for some time".

Det Chief Supt Jackson said the bomber had been tracked buying nuts from a DIY store that were used for shrapnel as well as the tin which is thought to have contained the explosive.

"This was a premeditated, calculated and vicious attack".

More than 1,000 officers have so far been involved in the ongoing investigation, with 8,000 entries on police logging system and at least 700 devices, such as phones, seized for examination. "We have a massive team still working flat-out on it and there are critical lines of inquiry at home and overseas which we will relentlessly pursue".
