'Wonder Woman' buries 'The Mummy' at box office

"Wonder Woman" of Warner Bros. easily remained atop the box office in North America for the second weekend in a row, taking in an estimated 57.18 million US dollars. Down by a fairly modest 44.6% from last weekend's mark (owing to the critical acclaim, word-of-mouth and lack of major competition), the tally brings the film's cumulative total to $205.0 million.

The Mummy is one of the actor's worst performing films at the domestic box office in recent years, but it is killing at the worldwide box office. It's also also a better second-weekend hold than every Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date; the closest was Thor with a 47% hold.

Industry observers will be holding out hope for other scheduled high-profile releases this summer, including next weekend's Pixar animated sequel Cars 3, Michael Bay and Universal's Transformers: The Dark Knight, and Warner Bros' Christopher Nolan-helmed World War II epic Dunkirk. 2, grossing $10.7 million and $6.2 million, respectively. Its budget was $149 million.

The Mummy looked its age, selling a relatively feeble $32.2 million in tickets for the movie's debut weekend.

"The Mummy" posted very strong openings of $52.2 million in China and $17.8 million in South Korea, both of which were records for films starring Mr. Cruise. The problem with that is that for all his legitimate A-list status, Cruise doesn't bring in the strongest opening weekends. Though early reports suggest a Mummy box office flop, the overseas money is showing how much appeal Tom Cruise still has to move audiences everywhere.

The heavily hyped entry in Universal's new "Dark Universe" franchise fared better internationally, however, where it is projected to earn just under $142 million in its first weekend of release.

It's on track to gross 141.8 million dollars from 63 overseas markets, lifting its anticipated global take to 174 million dollars, according to studio figures collected by comScore. Made for $125 million, it has been widely panned by critics.

"The Mummy" was announced as the kick-off to a "Dark Universe" of monster movies. You obviously want to set a somewhat consistent tone, so that people know what to expect when you see these movies, but it would be ideal for each movie to have its own identity, which is largely going to be dependent on who is directing the films and who is starring in the films. As a report by Box Office Mojo states, the reboot of the Brendan Fraser franchise pulled in an estimated $12 million at the domestic box office. The film is still sitting in decent shape and should be able to top out at $70 million or more domestically at the end of its run.
