President Trump to Qatar: Stop Funding Extremist Ideology

"We believe these are unintended consequences".

Qatar is the regional headquarters for U.S. Central Command and home to some 10,000 American troops, NPR's Scott Horsley has reported. The base houses almost 10,000 U.S. troops and is the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command.

Tillerson says the blockade is hindering USA military efforts and the campaign against the Islamic State group.

After an initial deployment of Turkish troops at a base in Doha, Turkish warplanes and ships will also be sent, the mass-circulation Hurriyet newspaper said on its website on Friday. "All of our supplies are getting in just fine".

Still, the Pentagon has been developing contingency plans in case there's any interruption, defense officials said.

More than 11,000 USA and coalition forces are stationed at the Udeid Air Base in Qatar, from which more than 100 aircraft operate.

As many as 59 individuals and 12 organisations - either Qatar based or funded by Qatar - on a "terror list", a joint statement by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the UAE has said.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the UAE and other countries announced they would withdraw diplomatic staff from Qatar. Saying he's dealt with Qatar's leaders for 15 years, Tillerson replied, "We know each other quite well". The hack, which USA officials reportedly believe was carried out by Russian Federation, includes the posting of a fake news story.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt have suspended all flights to and from Doha and closed off sea and air links to Qatar.

In addition to the humanitarian and military effects, Tillerson said the blockade is affecting US and worldwide companies' abilities to operate in the region. "We ask Qatar and other nations in the region to do more and do it faster", the US President said.

And Trump told a White House news conference Qatar "has historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level" and said "they have to end that funding".

A separate SPA report on Saturday acknowledged Tillerson's call for Qatar to curtail support for terrorism, but did not mention his remarks that the crisis was hurting ordinary Qataris, impairing business dealings and harming the US fight against the Islamic State militant group. "But he must do more and he must do it more quickly". It said Tillerson and Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani "discussed bilateral relations and means of enhancing them as well as the situation and the latest developments" in a crisis between it and Arab countries. The administration is also demanding Qatar drop all support for Syria's Salafist groups; those which adhere to the ideology of al Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and their subsidiaries.

Tillerson said that the GCC "must emerge united and stronger" to show its resolve.
