Firefighters yet to fully search burnt London tower block - fire brigade chief

Entire families are missing, and the death toll is certain to rise.

They rushed to safety but are now still awaiting to hear the fate of their home on the lower floor of the building.

"We built buildings in the 70s, those 70s buildings, many of them should be demolished, they haven't got easy fire escapes, they've got no sprinklers - it's totally, totally unacceptable in Britain that this is allowed to happen and people lose their lives in this way and people should be held to account".

Many people are still missing and firefighters are facing hazardous conditions as they search the charred building.

She said early Thursday that authorities have finally extinguished the last pockets of flame, and are trying to secure edges of the building for a fingertip search.

London fire investigators have been painstakingly searching for more victims of the inferno that engulfed the public housing building in London's North Kensington neighborhood.

Fire commissioner Dany Cotton said on British television that authorities didn't expect to find anyone else alive after the blaze.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but a tenants' group had complained for years about the risk of a fire.

Prime Minister Theresa May promised an investigation and visited the site on Thursday. The local council says families with young children, elderly residents and the vulnerable were given "immediate priority".

Planning documents detailing the refurbishment did not refer to a type of fire barrier that building safety experts said should be used when high-rise blocks are being re-clad, according to Reuters research. "That's why I am today ordering a full public inquiry into this disaster", she said in a statement.

"It is also heartening to see the incredible generosity of community volunteers rallying to help those affected by this awful event".

More than £1 million has been raised to help those affected by the fire, while volunteers and charities helped feed and shelter people who could not return to their homes overnight.

Piles of shoes, clothes, duvets and other items accumulated in several spots where volunteers were sorting them.

The Independent newspaper quoted one Andre Busso, 33, who said that Muslims played a big part in getting the people out of the burning building.

The singer Adele was among many Londoners who gathered close to the burnt tower late on Wednesday to show sympathy for the victims and survivors.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry also revealed they have made a donation today to the Evening Standard's emergency appeal.

London Fire Brigade said the cause of Tuesday night's fire in north Kensington is not yet known.

The fire that began around 1 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning also injured dozens, 18 of them critically, and left an unknown number missing.

12 people have now been killed in the deadly blaze.

A massive white poster has been placed on a wall nearby and people offered messages of hope and condolence in many languages, including English, Arabic and Spanish.
